Therefore, it is not the eye faculty that sees, because it (the eye faculty) is material and cannot act as a seer, and also because one can see even when obstructed by transparent objects such as glass. Therefore, it is by knowing all the objects that one sees and knows; if separated from knowing, how can one know? It is impossible. Therefore, eye consciousness is merely the condition for the sense faculty to enter into the object, a capacity for grasping the object, which is proven by the subsequent certainty of coming and going. Therefore, for example, the image that appears in a mirror is an image that arises similar to the object that appears in the mirror; how could it be the real object? Similarly, all that appears in consciousness is merely consciousness appearing in the form of that thing. For example, if a hundred people look at a single vase, each person's consciousness appears in the form of the vase, just as the image of a single vase appears separately in a hundred mirrors. If it were not so, then those hundred people, if each of their continuums did not have an appearance or knowing part of knowing the vase, then it would not be possible to know the vase. If it exists, then the part that appears in each person's mind cannot appear to another, because the continuums are different. Therefore, whatever appears is undeniably a self-appearance. However, such an appearance does not arise without a cause, so there is an external object that creates the appearance. The appearance arising from that is like the bulge of India (རྒྱ་,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) from India, or like an image from an object. For example, if the form of an object appears in a mirror, the real object can never appear in the mirror, but it appears as it is in the object. Similarly, whatever appears in one's own mind must be the form of the external object, but the external object must also possess everything that the form has without excess or deficiency. Therefore, one confuses the form that appears in one's own mind with the external object that creates the form, but in reality, this appearance is only a form and not the real thing. Therefore, the real external object is hidden, like being hidden behind the form, and is considered invisible. As long as one admits that external objects exist, one has no choice but to admit this, which is very reasonable. These are like glass stained with paint, if one holds it directly, then the glass

Just as the manifested color is grasping an image, the manifested appearance is only consciousness, and the basis for appearing as color and shape is considered to be external objects composed of aggregates of subtle particles that are different from consciousness. Therefore, it is believed that it is not the sense faculties that grasp the object, but consciousness that grasps the object. Some say that if external objects do not appear at all, then why are the forms of meat, etc., not grasped? Because both the vase and the meat are hidden and there is no difference, so saying that the external object appears in the first moment and is hidden thereafter is completely ignorant of the Sautrāntika's view. If the object is truly recognized in the first moment, then why not recognize it in the second moment, etc.? Even if it is hidden, it is impossible to have anything other than grasping the image that corresponds to it, just as it is never possible for a real object to appear in a mirror, but like whatever faces the mirror will appear, rather than anything appearing. In this regard, the example of the image here is merely to make it easier to understand. Thus, although it is said that consciousness has aspects, the Mind-Only school and this school are the same, the only difference being whether or not they acknowledge the independent existence of external objects. In this regard, for the aspectarians, there are three ways to analyze the grasper aspect and the consciousness that grasps it, which will be explained below. So, in this treatise, which of these three do you think is intended in terms of convention? The Gelug scholars say that this treatise is completely consistent with epistemology, and that multiplicity is non-dual. But in general, if we consider only the stream of consciousness from the perspective of inner-looking self-awareness, then saying that the multiplicity of appearances is non-dual in the mind is feasible in some cases. However, in the case of these three analyses, it is not just that, but it is necessary to understand the way in which the image is grasped through the power of the moon, so it is very unreasonable, so in this system, what is established by conventional valid cognition and is without harm is that the number of grasper and grasped are equal, and I think that is the only way, and that is also the view of the treatise. In this regard, when the Mind-Only school refutes the equality of the number of grasper and grasped, some former teachers believed that many similar consciousnesses that grasp blue, etc., arise simultaneously. If that is the case, then the Blessed One said: "It is impossible and there is no opportunity for two minds to arise simultaneously without precedence." So it says.
