Merely clinging to the individual streams of consciousness, the term "person" is applied. It is for the sake of the person wandering in samsara and attaining liberation that it is placed upon the collection of many moments, both past and future. Therefore, by focusing on this with the mind, it is referred to by names such as "self" and "purusha." Whatever belongs to one's own stream of consciousness, beings grasp at it as "I" without examination or analysis. Furthermore, the non-Buddhists believe that this "self" is the enjoyer, a permanent entity, and not the agent of change, possessing such characteristics. They also cling to its essence as if it were unborn and always existing. Some claim it pervades all actions, others that it does not, some that it is material, others that it is consciousness. They proclaim tenets that are like various nails of conceptual imputation hammered into the iron shackles of innate existence. The Sthavira school believes that the self exists as a real entity and is the basis of cause and effect. It is neither identical to the aggregates nor can it be said to be different. Similarly, it cannot be described as either permanent or impermanent. All Buddhist tenet systems that hold to characteristics believe that it is merely mistaking the collection and continuum of the five aggregates as "I." If one establishes through reasoning that the self does not exist inherently, then, like this, these five aggregates of clinging, which arise and perish moment by moment, are not the self. It is impossible to reasonably demonstrate that something called a "person" exists elsewhere, even to the slightest degree. Therefore, the term "person" is merely imputed in dependence upon the aggregates, which serve as the basis of imputation. In reality, it is devoid of the nature of being truly one or many, which is very clearly understood by those with intelligence. Because a self that is different from the aggregates is not established, and the aggregates are multiple and impermanent, the self cannot have a single, true nature. Furthermore, if the self were momentary, it would become multiple due to the arising of different natures, and the agent and the experiencer would be different. If it were not momentary, the former would not cease and the latter would not arise, and it would become a permanent, single nature. If that were the case, then bondage and liberation, happiness and suffering, and so on would be unreasonable, and it would be impossible for an unarisen thing to exist, like the son of a barren woman. In general, it would be refuted by the reasoning that refutes permanent entities.

Since the inexpressible self is the pervasive truth, how could the pervaded truth exist? Precisely because it is neither one nor different, it is established without contrivance, like a flower in the sky. Even in conventional terms, if something is real, it can be established as either one or different in relation to a single basis, which is pervasive. But the self does not have these, so asserting that the self exists in things is extremely foolish, like admitting there are no trees but hoping for leaves. Therefore, the Bhagavan said: 'For example, when limbs are assembled, it is called a chariot. Likewise, with the five aggregates as the cause, sentient beings are spoken of conventionally.' As it is said, the so-called person (pudgala) is devoid of the nature of one and many, so it does not exist as truly existent in the ultimate sense. But in conventional terms, with the five aggregates as the cause, it is fixated as self. That is, the five aggregates are grasped as one without being divided, and are labeled as a person. Moreover, the continuous moments of the five aggregates are grasped as one and called a continuum. The dharmas belonging to that continuum, without being divided by direction and time, are labeled as one. Just as it is said, 'This person previously moved from here and was later born here,' it is permissible to say. In this regard, the innate ego-grasping only fixates on the 'I' that is imputed in dependence on the five aggregates, and does not clearly fixate on the five aggregates after dividing them. This is because it is merely due to the force of habit of not distinguishing the fixated aspects. However, since the basis of imputation of the imputed person is the five aggregates, it must be established that only the five aggregates are imputed as a person if the fixated aspects are distinguished and analyzed. Just as the mind that grasps a pot, its object is only the imputed pot, but the self-characteristics of the form, etc., of its basis are also established as the object. Therefore, if we analyze what the self is that serves as the basis of cause and effect, some consider it to be the continuum of consciousness, others consider it to be the continuum of the aggregates, and so on. But in reality, only the agent can ripen; it is impossible for it to ripen in other cases. And the so-called agent is merely a label imputed to a collection of many dharmas as one agent. In reality, the agent and the results of actions, etc., do not exist as truly established, and the key to not having these
