Regarding consciousness, it is established as this and that consciousness. Otherwise, it is impossible to establish various distinctions of consciousness. Thus, in the continuum of a single individual, there are not many different minds with the object of a pot in a single moment of the consciousness apprehending a pot. Moreover, the earlier consciousness of unconditioned consciousness, in its own nature, is established as unconditioned consciousness focusing on a single object. It cannot be established as consciousness with the object of another dharma, therefore that consciousness has no division into two. Here also, if the object of the earlier and later two consciousnesses is true in its essence as one, then the earlier consciousness would also become the later consciousness, and the later consciousness would likewise have to become the earlier consciousness. Thus, the object of the earlier consciousness, the unconditioned, exists even in the later time, but the earlier consciousness does not exist; the object of knowledge of the later consciousness exists in the earlier time, but the later consciousness does not exist, and it is not permissible to say so. If that object has a difference of earlier and later times, it cannot be one in earlier and later. Even if there is no difference in the object, but the consciousness possessing the object is momentary, so many earlier and later consciousnesses repeatedly focus on that single object, Then, why would the object of that consciousness not exist before the object-possessor exists, and after the object-possessor ceases? Because the object and the object-possessing consciousness of each object cannot be separated, it is impossible to apprehend the object in a separated state. The single true entity of each object, which is not that and not other, does not exist. If it exists, it would be an object that is not of a momentary mind. Thus, know that it is also impossible for that single true entity to be established in the mind's view. Here, it is not that just because the object is one, it is impossible for the sequential consciousnesses apprehending it to occur. Rather, it is that if the object is a true single entity, then it is impossible for the sequential consciousnesses apprehending it to arise. For example, the presumption that one knew the pot yesterday and knows it today is merely based on the continuous arising of different moments of the pot's own characteristics, which are mistaken as one. If one thinks that it is actually true as one, then this reasoning refutes that view. Therefore, many reasons such as being unrelated and having harm, etc., can also be established effortlessly in this way. Therefore, whether it is unconditioned or conditioned, if one asserts it to be a true single entity, then the sequential consciousnesses focusing on it cannot arise.

This is refuted by the established reasoning. However, the 'one' and 'many' that are merely imputed are not to be refuted in all cases, because one's own acceptance of distinguishing this manner is important in all cases. Similarly, the refutation of permanence and truth is also like this. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: 'Whatever is stable, like vajra, stone, etc., its meaning is also independent of others, therefore, the consciousness of all beings will simultaneously generate itself. Because of helping each other by acting together, if these arise in sequence, then each moment is said to be different.' Just as in order to establish a single true phenomenon, the mind must focus on it and remain there. If it focuses, then that focusing condition will generate self-grasping consciousness, and since the nature of the self is indistinguishable from the phenomenon in terms of time, the single true, independent phenomenon cannot repeatedly generate multiple different individuals within the phenomenon. Although the above has been well established, it is obscured by delusion, and it is still difficult to dispel the notion that there is no contradiction between different minds focusing on a single true phenomenon, just like multiple minds focusing on a single pot. Therefore, if the above is analyzed in more detail, when the object of knowledge that exists at the time of the previous consciousness is being known by the previous consciousness, does the later consciousness know it or not? It is impossible to know it, because the later consciousness has not yet arisen at that time. If it does not know it, then it has become the object of knowledge of the previous consciousness, and there must be a time when it has not become the object of knowledge of the later consciousness. In that case, it is also impossible to know it in the later consciousness's own time, because if it is believed that the object is the only indivisible part, which is permanent, then it must be the same later as it was initially. If it is different from that, then it will lose the nature of being indivisible and permanent. Furthermore, if one analyzes whether the previous consciousness knows it in the time of the later consciousness, then one can refute the notion that the previous and later objects are the same. Therefore, the objects of the previous and later consciousnesses in their own time are different, because the later consciousness does not know the previous object, and the previous consciousness does not know the later object, there is such a difference. If there is no way to distinguish, and the later consciousness knows the previous object, and the previous consciousness knows the later object, then because the later object is known by consciousness, the previous consciousness will also become the later consciousness, and because the previous object is known by consciousness, the later consciousness will also become the previous consciousness, becoming sequential consciousness, and past and future.
