So it is. Thus, there are nine aspects of the perception of ugliness. This involves contemplating a part of the physical aggregate, specifically the subtle aspects of color and shape, and practicing meditation. It only suppresses afflictions, but does not completely eliminate them. The yoga of meditating on ugliness should be understood as threefold. Among them, starting from any place one likes, such as the toe of one's own foot or the gap in the forehead, rot one finger joint of flesh, contemplate and become accustomed to only bones remaining. Then, gradually contemplate the entire body, dwelling, and eventually the external ocean as skeletons, that is, contemplate them as being filled with skeletons. Then, gradually withdrawing the focus from the edge of the object, gather the mind back to one's own body as merely bones. Meditating in this way is the yoga of a beginner, that is, the preliminary practice. After that, in order to particularly gather the mind, maintaining the previous contemplation, abandon the bones of the feet, from contemplating the remaining body as merely bones, to half of the body, and then to half of the skull, abandoning them as bones. Maintaining the contemplation that half of the skull is merely bones is called the yoga of complete purification. When abandoning the contemplation that half of the skull is also bones, and expanding and contracting as before, maintaining the contemplation of a finger joint-sized bone between the two eyebrows, this is the yoga of complete fulfillment of mindfulness, as explained by the Vaibhashikas. Second, where does the essence rely, to which realm does the object belong, and what does the basis rely on? These four are in order: The essence of ugliness is the virtue of non-attachment, and if together with its retinue, it is the five aggregates or four aggregates. The place is the four special grounds of meditative concentration, together with the four close placements, making nine. There are ten in the desire realm. The object is the phenomena appearing in the desire realm, focusing on color and shape. The basis can only be generated by people from the three continents such as Jambudvipa (ancient name of India, referring to Earth here), because of the deaf, mute, foolish, and those without the antidote of mindfulness. It does not exist in other realms or spheres. The aspect is the aspect of ugliness. The time is, the past ugliness is focused on the past, and so on. Those with the nature of non-arising focus on the three times. The intention is only mindfulness, therefore it is contaminated. Second, regarding exhalation and inhalation, essence, place, object, basis.

Classification. Where is the location? With or without mind? Grasped or not grasped? From what cause does it arise? Are there differences in the location of the object and the subject? These ten points are shown in order: inhaling and exhaling, especially the inner ones. Commentary: The nature of the memory to dispel is the wisdom that knows exactly how the exhaling and inhaling are. It is called memory because, with the power of memory, it arises and acts on the result—wisdom. Therefore, the name of the cause is established on the result, just like mindfulness. The ground refers to the three proximity stages of the first three dhyanas, as well as the special dhyana, and the ground of desire realm, making five in total. These are in accordance with the antidote to conceptual thought, so they are in accordance with the feeling of equanimity. Therefore, the three proximity stages are also the ground of equanimity. In the first three actual stages, there are feelings of joy, etc., but from the fourth stage onwards, there is no movement of air. Some say that if the first three actual stages are placed in samadhi, they may be in accordance with equanimity, so it is the eighth ground. The object of practice, that is, the object of focus, is "I." It is the basis of the desire realm because there are many conceptual thoughts. Among them, the intelligent ones are both gods and humans. This Dharma is only the Dharma of the inner path, because there is no scriptural proof that accurately explains it, and because one has not realized the profound Dharma oneself, it is not the Dharma of the outer path, the heretics. Among them, what is profound? It is the six types, such as counting. Among them, counting means not being intentional, resting the body and mind, focusing on the breath, and counting from one to ten in the mind. If it is less than this, one will sink; if it is more than this, one will be agitated, so one does not count. Among them, if one grasps two as one, then the count is incomplete; if one grasps one as two, then the count is excessive; if one grasps inhaling as exhaling, and exhaling as inhaling, then the count is confused. Counting without these three faults is accurate counting. Following refers to when these enter, from the armpit, heart, navel, waist, buttocks, legs, shins, soles of the feet, according to the strength, they gradually enter between a span and a cubit. When exhaling, from the soles of the feet, they gradually exhale from the nostrils, according to the strength, a span if small, and a cubit if large. Some say that when entering, it is the life-sustaining wind, and when exhaling, it is the scattering wind.
