Alternatively, it is explained that the cause for generating worldly knowledge in others is named after the result. Since this is the occasion for worldly knowledge, understanding the terms of body and speech can also be considered a characteristic of worldly knowledge. Sixth, understanding the four reliances: In order to avoid the faults of relying on individuals and clinging to the literal meaning of scriptures, the four reliances are taught. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, said that one should rely on the Dharma of the scriptures and not rely on the mere words of individuals; this is relying on the Dharma and not relying on the person. Furthermore, regarding the Dharma of the scriptures, one should also consider other meanings, such as "parents are to be killed," etc. For those with hidden meanings, one should not cling to the literal meaning but rely on the meaning and not rely on the words. Regarding the meaning, there are two types: provisional and definitive. Which definitive meaning, which possesses the ultimate standard of discernment, should one rely on? For example, the teachings that explain the existence of persons and aggregates are provisional, while the teachings that explain their lack of inherent existence are definitive. Likewise, the profound Sutras of the Tathagatas, and Maitreya, the regent who elucidates their intention, as well as the great chariot masters such as Nagarjuna and Asanga, who were prophesied by the Buddhas, have explained the profound non-duality. Therefore, one should not rely on the provisional but rely on the definitive. Regarding the meaning of the definitive Sutras, one should not rely on the aspects that are merely within the scope of conceptual mind or that become the object of the eight consciousnesses, which possess the aspect of grasper and grasped. Instead, one should rely on the realm of experience attained by non-conceptual wisdom, which is free from grasper and grasped, inexpressible, and to be realized individually by oneself, that is, not relying on consciousness but relying on wisdom. Furthermore, in the *Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra*, it is said: "To view both the person and phenomena as having inherent existence is to rely on the person; to realize that both lack inherent existence is to rely on the Dharma-nature." Similarly, words are worldly dharmas, and meaning is transcendental dharma. Alternatively, all conventional dharmas are words or dharmas, and all ultimate dharmas are meaning. Likewise, any Sutra that teaches entering the path is a provisional Sutra, and any Sutra that teaches entering the result is a definitive Sutra.

Or the Sutra Pitaka, or the conventional teaching, the Sutra of provisional meaning, and the Sutra of ultimate meaning, the Sutra Pitaka of definitive meaning. What is consciousness? The consciousness of sentient beings in the desire realm depends on the aggregate of form, and similarly, the consciousness of the form realm depends on the aggregate of feeling, the consciousness of the lower three formless realms depends on the aggregate of perception, and the consciousness of the peak of existence depends on the aggregate of formation. Thus, the abiding of consciousness, approaching and abiding in the four, such as form, is consciousness. Understanding that all those consciousnesses abiding in the four aggregates are emptiness, and not clinging to the nature of consciousness itself, is said to be wisdom. The necessity of teaching the four reliances is: Some people, according to their own desires, say that this is not the word of the Buddha and not the true Dharma. In order to abandon the rejection or slander of the true Dharma spoken truthfully, it is the first reliance. The second is to abandon clinging to what is said, such as killing one's father and mother. The Buddha said: An ordinary person, as well as an Arhat and a Pratyekabuddha. If one person appears in the world, it will benefit and bring happiness to all the world. Who is it? It is the Tathagata. Because they do not understand that this is said from the perspective of the provisional meaning of conventional truth, they mistakenly believe that a person is substantial.
