Therefore, understanding the treatises on the five sciences is truly superior. Why? First, the basis or entity is the five sciences themselves. The Shravakas, for the sake of their own liberation, mainly focus on the aspect of selflessness of the individual in the inner science, and do not pay much attention to the meanings taught by all the Mahayana scriptures, let alone other sciences. Bodhisattvas, in order to attain the wisdom of omniscience and accomplish the benefit of limitless sentient beings, learn and teach others all aspects of vast knowledge. They are proficient in the principles of the three vehicles of inner science, as well as the nature, causes, classifications, and combinations of expressive words and terms, and the summarization, decomposition, and augmentation of letters, as explained in the treatises on grammar. They can effortlessly apply them, possess definite and beautiful words, understand the meaning without distorting the sound. Moreover, they prove these meanings through direct perception, inference, and scriptural authority, refute views that do not conform to valid cognition, and establish views that conform to valid cognition, thereby generating unwavering certainty about the meaning. Through the science of medicine, they pacify all diseases of sentient beings, harmonize the elements, and cultivate methods for longevity. They create various crafts that benefit sentient beings and teach these methods to others. In short, in order to accomplish the benefit of both self and others, Bodhisattvas must first listen to the treatises on the five sciences or the shastras, retain them without forgetting what they have heard, become accustomed to reciting them orally, contemplate their meanings, and understand their meanings without error. By distinguishing between good and bad explanations, they teach others in accordance with the truth. This is the superiority from the perspective of the basis or entity. Second, the purpose is that all the learning and practice of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is for the purpose of self-benefit, while the Bodhisattvas are for the purpose of benefiting others, and therefore are more superior. In terms of activities, merely understanding the scriptures and inner science of the Shravakas can only accomplish self-benefit.

The activities of assistance are: Bodhisattvas become proficient in the three vehicles of inner knowledge, enter the Great Vehicle themselves, and also teach this path to others who have the potential for the Great Vehicle. For those with the potential for Hearers and Solitary Realizers, they also engage in the activity of teaching the corresponding vehicles. Similarly, logic and the other four sciences also benefit others and engage in the activity of teaching these treatises to others, thus being particularly excellent. The characteristics are: In the aspect of inner knowledge of Hearers, they listen to a small number of treatises that teach the selflessness of the individual, and hold onto their words, and so on. However, Bodhisattvas, with respect to the inner knowledge encompassed by the three vehicles, as well as the countless treatises on grammar, logic, crafts, and medicine, tirelessly listen, hold, purify, investigate, and comprehend them, possessing five characteristics, thus being particularly excellent. The knowledge of the Hearers' treatises will be exhausted at the time of nirvana with remainder, while the knowledge of the Bodhisattvas' five sciences treatises will not be exhausted even in the realm of nirvana without remainder, thus being particularly excellent. The result is particularly excellent through true accomplishment, that is, the Hearers cannot attain omniscience through the knowledge of treatises, while Bodhisattvas, after becoming proficient in the five sciences, through the power of completely dedicating themselves to omniscience, can truly accomplish the result of omniscient wisdom that understands all aspects of knowable things. The knowledge of the Bodhisattvas' five sciences treatises, if considered from the aspect of what encompasses them, is mainly encompassed by samadhi and dharani. Some of those who are proficient in the five sciences are of the nature of samadhi, are held by samadhi, and are related to samadhi; some are of the nature of dharani, are held by dharani, and are related to dharani. Thus, from the aspect of being encompassed by samadhi and dharani, they can also be divided into two types. For example, the Courageous Goer and others, through the power of obtaining samadhi, no matter what samadhi they abide in, can understand all the treatises of the five sciences without obstruction, thereby maturing sentient beings. The nature of dharani is that all the treatises of the five sciences that have been heard in countless past lives
