I, if it is said that there is no "I" that can liberate beings from bondage, cowardice, defilement, and the three darknesses, that is not the case. Even without an "I", there is still existence from the viewer to the liberator. However, the "I" does nothing, such as viewing, etc. Why does it not do anything? If, as a companion to the root consciousness and the object, there is no "I", then is the "I" a cause for the non-arising of viewing and other phenomena? Or does the "I" use its power to drive the root consciousness and other causes, and then act as the master or lord who performs viewing and other actions? It is not the first case. Because if there are two causes, such as the eye and other root consciousnesses and the form and other objects, relying on them can generate the six consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness. No other cause is needed for this. And it has not been found that it is produced by other causes that are not these two. Therefore, the "I" is not the cause of the generation of these consciousnesses. Because relying solely on these two can generate consciousness with undiminished intention, there is no need for another cause, the "I", so that cause is meaningless. For example, just as firewood does not need water to generate fire. Therefore, the viewer of form is eye consciousness, etc., because until the liberator, consciousness is called the viewer, etc. The "I" will not change from the viewer to the liberator, because it has not been found that the "I", which is not consciousness itself, is the viewer, etc., and the liberator. In the second case, if it is said that the viewing and other phenomena produced by the aggregation of the eye, object, and consciousness are also due to the power of the "I", and if there is no "I", it will not happen that way, then, if that "I" is a master who has the power to exercise power as he pleases and becomes independent, then, obtaining happiness will not become impermanent, but should always be happy, but that is not the case. And, if unwanted suffering should never arise, but there is no sentient being who does not lose happiness and does not experience suffering, so it should be known that the "I" is not independent. The encounter between the root consciousness and the object also produces various desired and undesired situations due to the effect of karma, and various joys and sorrows arise due to the aggregation of causes, not due to the desire or blessing of the "I", so the "I" will not change from the viewer to the liberator, understand this.

This is to be done. There are other faults in saying that there is a self. If the self exists as a substance, then it must be proven that the function and characteristics of that self are such and such. For example, the function of the eye sense and eye consciousness is to perform the action of looking at forms. The form of the eye sense is clear, and the eye consciousness is said to be the knowledge of blue, etc. Similarly, it must be said that the function and characteristics of that self are such. However, since the self is not a substance, it cannot be perceived by valid cognition like the son of a barren woman or the horns of a rabbit, so its function and characteristics cannot be correctly stated. To state the function and characteristics of the aggregates as its dharma is a perverse view, which is subject to hundreds of logical harms, and therefore there is the fault of taking on one's own labor. Another fault is that if there is a self of a person, the Buddha must see it, because the Buddha has comprehended all knowable things. If it is thought that the Buddha saw the self of a person, and therefore said the self of an ordinary person and the self of a noble person, then the meaning of that has already been explained above. If it is said that this means seeing the self of a person as existing as a substance, then it will harm the three perfect enlightenments. The three perfect enlightenments are the profound manifest perfect enlightenment, the uncommon manifest perfect enlightenment, and the transcendent manifest enlightenment. Among them, comprehending the selflessness of phenomena is the first. Comprehending the selflessness of persons is the second, because it is uncommon to non-Buddhists. Thus, comprehending the two selflessnesses is something that worldly people do not have, so it is called transcendent manifest enlightenment. Alternatively, the three—the absence of imputation, the dependent arising existing nominally, and the perfect nature being peaceful by nature—are applied in order to the three manifest enlightenments of profound, uncommon, and transcendent. In reality, the emptiness of the two selves cannot be realized by the wisdom of worldly people, but is taught to those to be trained by the Buddha after he has realized it. However, if the Buddha sees that there is a self, then it is no different from the views of worldly people, so...
