Where does it exist? The reason or necessity for establishing such an assertion that one of the five aggregates is neither one nor different, and cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent, must also be stated. It is impossible to speak without necessity or reason. One cannot establish one's own tenet with just these words. Thus refuted: They say: Self and aggregates are not one, because it must be assumed that even when the former aggregate ceases, the self still exists in samsara. Self and aggregates are also not different, because no agent who accumulates karma and experiencer of its ripening is found other than the aggregates. It is also not permanent, because it changes in different states of rebirth. Nor is the self impermanent, because from beginningless time to the end, I am one self, and there is no birth and cessation of multiple selves. Therefore, as the basis of cause and effect, it must be accepted that the substantially existent self cannot be said to be one or different from the aggregates. For example, fire and firewood are not one, because firewood alone does not perform the act of burning, and fire does not perform the act of firewood; nor are they different, because fire is not found to be different other than firewood turning into fire, just like that. If you assert that both self and aggregates are substantially existent, then saying that it is not reasonable to say that they are neither one nor different is just meaningless nonsense without any reason or necessity to establish your own assertion, which is unreasonable. How is it unreasonable? If both a pillar and a vase are each acknowledged as substantially existent, and then it is said that pillar and vase are not one, then the fact that they are different is established by that very statement, so it is not permissible to say again that pillar and vase are also not different, just like that. Once it is acknowledged that both self and aggregates are substantially existent, then it is reasonable to acknowledge that self and aggregates are not one, but there is no need to say that they are not different or other, and it will be very contradictory to one's own commitment, just like saying that pillar and vase are not different. If you are concerned about the fault of not finding an agent who performs actions and an experiencer of ripening other than the aggregates if you acknowledge difference, so you acknowledge that they are not other, then the fault of acknowledging that the two substantially existent self and aggregates are not other but one has been stated above.

It is unspeakable. If one does not admit oneness for fear of that fault, then since one has already admitted otherness, the oneness that one has admitted is immediately destroyed, so speaking contrary to admission is not only unnecessary, but also a very great fault. Therefore, if one must believe that the self exists as a substance, then within the category of what can be considered either one or different, a substance that is neither one nor different does not exist in the world. It is not mentioned in the scriptures, nor can it be established by reasoning. Therefore, if one admits that the self is either one with or different from the aggregates, one will incur some fault, which is because the self is not a substance, but merely imputed, as mentioned above. Therefore, because one considers the self to be merely imputed, it is not permissible to say one or other. If one does not understand this, but while considering the self to be a substance, says that it is not permissible to say one or other, nor is it permissible to say permanent or impermanent, what is said is merely contradictory words, and it does not establish the necessity of being able to serve as the basis for cause and effect. It is unreasonable to use the example of fire and wood not being one or other, because fire and wood are different in terms of characteristics. Fire is the characteristic of burning and heat, while wood is not heat and burning, but the characteristic of being hard and usable for various purposes, so the characteristics are different. Moreover, in the world, these two are seen as different, there is only wood without fire, and there is also flame without wood being far apart, and fire can also be seen from rubbing iron and stone, etc. From the point of view of the treatises, fire is one of the four great elements, while wood is transformed from the four great elements, gathered by water, hardened by earth, and mainly composed of the element of wind movement. In this way, it is not permissible to say that wood is like fire, not one or other, because these two are the substance of different things. Now, refuting the self that the non-Buddhist Tirthikas desire. The Tirthikas say: The self exists, it is the one who sees forms, and similarly the one who hears sounds, the one who smells odors, the one who tastes flavors, the one who feels tactile sensations, and the one who distinguishes phenomena, and also the one who creates virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and the one who enjoys the ripening results or objects.
