Since this does not change what is common to the mundane and the transcendent, it will harm the three perfect enlightenments. Another fault of assuming that the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) is real is that if the self is real and it performs activities such as seeing and hearing, then, wanting to see, does it see without effort such as opening the eyes, or does it see through effort, etc.? If analyzed, both of these are unreasonable, because there are three faults that will be discussed below. For the act of seeing, etc., the self's action is not spontaneously occurring without effort, nor is the action of opening the eyes to see and focusing on listening, etc., the cause of that, because seeing is done by consciousness relying on the senses and objects. Because I do not have the actions of seeing and hearing, etc., so it is shown. Explaining its meaning is that if the act of seeing, etc., is not done by me, but occurs naturally, then I will not be the agent, because it is not done by me, but occurs naturally. The actions of seeing, etc., are occasional, therefore they are impermanent, therefore they have a cause, and it is unreasonable for them to occur naturally without a cause. If it occurs naturally without a cause, then the actions will be permanent, but this has been refuted by direct perception. If actions occur without a cause, then the results that occur without a cause, since they arise without depending on a cause, all actions will occur simultaneously, and must always exist at all times. Therefore, the actions of seeing, etc., cannot be spontaneous without effort. I am also not the cause of seeing and hearing, etc., why? Is my action permanent, is it the cause of seeing and hearing, etc.? Or is my action impermanent, is that the cause? Or is the action neither permanent nor impermanent, is that the cause? The first case is unreasonable, if my action is permanent, is the cause of seeing, etc., then my permanent action always remains the same as before, therefore the cause of seeing, etc., always exists, even if the senses and objects have not gathered, and before the act of seeing with the eyes, etc., has not been performed, there must be an agent of seeing, but without seeing.
