Although the five faculties such as the eye and the five consciousnesses do not apprehend, it is not established as non-existent by that mere fact. Just as the minds and mental factors not apprehended by the five sense consciousnesses are apprehended by the mental consciousness and considered to exist, those who believe in the existence of a self say that the self exists because it is apprehended by the mental consciousness. The Blessed One also said, "In this very life, one apprehends and clings to a self," so they say because he spoke of apprehending a self. In response to this: The apprehension of a self by those who believe in its existence is inverted. Apprehending something non-existent as existent is a delusion, like mistaking a rope for a snake, and it is not apprehended after the mental consciousness has directly seen it as existent. The Blessed One did not say that the self, as a real entity, is apprehended by valid cognition, but rather that one views it as a self even though it is without a self, and having apprehended it with the mental consciousness, one also gives it the name "self" in language. Those who assert the existence of a self say: If there were no self from the beginning, it would not be reasonable to apprehend it even with the mind. But since the minds of all sentient beings apprehend a self, how can this apprehension of a self be inverted? If the apprehension of a self were not inverted, then there would have to be no fault. But this view of self is of the nature of fault, is the essence of afflicted phenomena, and is the cause of all other afflictions, so it is clearly inverted. That is to say, this apprehension of a self is a type of view among the six root afflictions, namely the view of the aggregates as a real self. From this, all afflictions such as attachment arise, and by their power, cyclic existence, which is of the nature of various sufferings, is accomplished, so there is fault in this, and therefore it is an inverted apprehension. Others say: Although the view of self is of the nature of afflicted phenomena, it is not inverted. If it were not inverted, then it should not become an afflicted phenomenon. Whatever is an afflicted phenomenon is inverted, for example, clinging to permanence and purity. Whatever is not an afflicted phenomenon, then there is no inversion in it, for example, clinging to impermanence and impurity. Therefore, the inverted conceptions of purity, pleasure, permanence, and self are eliminated by the path of conceiving impurity, suffering, impermanence, and no-self.

Having completely purified all faults, one attains complete liberation, just as the eye disease of seeing things upside down due to the fault of cataracts disappears. Furthermore, those who assert the self say: You who assert that a person is nominally existent should not nominally designate something without a basis. So, upon what do you rely to designate a person? The answer is: This designation of a person is not because a person is substantially existent, but merely because a person is designated upon the five aggregates of appropriation. As the sutra also says: Whatever renunciate or brahmin designates as "self" or "mine," those are merely designated as "I" or "mine" upon the five aggregates of appropriation. When asked whether the designated person and the five aggregates that are the basis of designation are one or different, the answer is: Because of two faults, etc., a single verse is spoken. According to the system that holds a person to be substantially existent, one must assert that the person and the aggregates are either one or different. A substantially existent thing is different from other substances and not different from its own substance, just as a vase is different from the substance of cloth and one with the substance of the vase itself. For a designated person, there is no substance other than the aggregates, and because it is different only in terms of the basis of designation and the designation, it is also not one. As will be explained, because of the two faults, this self is not to be spoken of as one with or different from the aggregates. The person or self and the aggregates are not one, nor are they different or other. The two faults are: if the aggregates and the self are one, then the five aggregates would be the self, and if the self is other than the aggregates, then that self would necessarily be substantially existent as something other than the aggregates. If that were the case, what fault would there be? If the aggregates were the self, then like the aggregates, the self would become multiple and impermanent, or like the self, the five aggregates would become one and permanent. If it is different from the aggregates, then it would necessarily be perceived as something other than the aggregates, and the actions accumulated by the five aggregates and the experience of the results of happiness and suffering would have no connection to the self. The Vaibhashika school, a branch of those who assert the self, although they consider the Buddha to be the teacher, have transgressed the teacher's teaching of no-self and argue for the substantial existence of the self. If the self
