So it is. Thus, because of having a mind of reversed delusion, samsara is also established. By eliminating that mind of reversed delusion with wisdom that possesses valid cognition, liberation is also unfailingly accomplished. If there were no mind of reversed delusion, and all that is seen by worldly people were seen as truly correct, then all would have been liberated from the beginning, or else there would never be liberation. But it is not like that; because defilement and purification exist unfailingly, one should not take merely what is seen or not seen by the world as a measure, but rely on the path of correct reasoning that possesses valid cognition, and thus the light of intelligence will greatly expand. From "dryness and growth" and so forth up to the question, as stated above, one should understand that external phenomena are also momentary. Thus, the meaning of the commentary by Vasubandhu, which was extensively explained by the teacher Lodrö Tenpa (Blo gros brtan pa), has been completely summarized and clearly presented here. Second, to establish the absence of self in a person: This is taught through twelve verses beginning with "A person is imputed." Among the four seals of Dharma, a detailed explanation is given of what is difficult to understand. Impermanence is taught as twofold: impermanence in the sense of non-existence, and impermanence in the sense of momentary destruction. Within that, to establish momentary impermanence, there are fourteen types of reasoning for general establishment, and specifically, fourteen types of reasoning for establishing that internal phenomena are momentary. After establishing about ten types of reasoning that directly show that external phenomena are momentary, the absence of self in a person is established. Actually, by establishing above that the five aggregates are momentarily impermanent, it is also established in meaning that there is no single self of a person. However, in order to refute worldly people and non-Buddhists, who consider the five aggregates to be the agent who carries the burden, the independent "self," or call it "life," "person," "agent," and similarly, they consider the aggregates to be the continuous nourisher, the powerful one with various skills, or call it "powerful one," "lord of power," "lord of beings, maker of power," or consider it to be born from power, "born of power," "son of power," and so on, they proclaim many such names, and they intend to establish that these do not exist. First, if someone asks, what is the reason for imputing a person? The answer is that a person is imputed in dependence on these five aggregates.

The "self" spoken of by the Vaisheshika school is existent and is considered the basis for bondage and liberation. The Sautrantika school and others also believe that the "self" exists, because the Blessed One also taught about ordinary beings and those who have entered the stream, and that when a person appears in the world, they bring benefit and happiness to the entire world, just like the Tathagata. Therefore, all sentient beings have a "self." If there were no "self," who would be bound in samsara, and who would be liberated? Who would accomplish the benefit of themselves and others, and who would enter the path? Therefore, they believe that the "self" exists. The non-Buddhists believe that the size of the "self" corresponds to the body. Some believe it is matter, some believe it is consciousness, some believe it has form, and some believe it is formless, and so on, with various views. They all believe that the general "self" is permanent and singular. Others make various speculations based on ideas of a self-existent being and an agent. The Sautrantika school and others believe that the "self" exists as a substance, but it is neither one with the aggregates nor different from them, so it cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent, and so on. Therefore, to show that it is not in accordance with their views, it is said that "person" and "self" are dependent on the five aggregates and exist only as a designation. Considering this, the Blessed One also conformed to the world and taught using the designation of the name of a person from an ordinary being to a Buddha, but the "self" and the person do not exist as a substance, ultimate truth, or by their own nature. In this way, by showing that it exists by designation and that self-nature does not exist as a substance, there is no fault of either not being able to establish a mere designation or of the "self" existing by its own nature. If you ask: How is it shown that the "self" does not exist as a substance? If the "self" existed as a substance, it would have to be observed by either direct perception or inference, but because it is not observed by either of these means of valid cognition, it is established that it does not exist as a substance. If you ask: How is it that the six sense faculties, such as the eye, and the consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, cannot be observed by direct perception? Others say that the "self" is the eye and the eye
