Questions were posed to those who wished to abide: Since you believe that all conditioned things are ultimately impermanent, why do you not accept momentary impermanence in the meantime? They replied: We see that conditioned things eventually perish, but before they perish, we do not see momentary destruction, so we do not accept this momentary destruction. To this, one should ask: The flame of an oil lamp and the flow of water, etc., are newly arising in each moment, and the previous moment ceases, which is accepted by both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. However, when a river is seen from afar, and when I do not stir the oil lamp, if momentary destruction is not directly seen by the senses, why do you not accept that they are momentary? They replied: When a river is viewed from afar, it appears the same, but when viewed up close, new water is constantly produced, and it is clearly seen that it is not the same water. As for the oil lamp, the previous flame gradually diminishes and disappears at the tip, and then new flames gradually arise. Eventually, when the oil is exhausted, the flame becomes smaller and smaller until it goes out. Because we never see it as it was before, we cannot say that they are not momentary. Pillars, vases, houses, people, stones, etc., even if left for years and months, do not become smaller, and they remain as they were seen before, so we have not seen them perish in an instant. Again, the question is asked: Pillars, vases, and other things, initially appear, and in the middle, due to the influence of conditions, their color, shape, etc., will become different from before, and eventually, when they meet with conditions, will they not actually perish? Since this is the case, why are these not momentary like oil lamps? They replied: Oil lamps and other conditioned things such as pillars and vases have different characteristics. Oil lamps are seen as having the nature of generating heat and light, being unstable, and arising and ceasing in an instant. Other things such as pillars and vases, from the time they are produced until a certain time, have the function of supporting and holding water, so they are seen as having a hard and stable nature, so the two are not the same. To this, it should be pointed out: The things of conditioned things are only different in their own nature, which is only self and other two

Although it has been established, this does not establish that all phenomena are impermanent by nature of being momentary, because the reason is that there are two kinds of different natures: different self-nature and different functions. Different self-nature is like the self-nature of fire is heat, and the self-nature of water is wetness. Different functions are that candles and so on arise and perish in each moment, while other phenomena such as vases arise and exist for a period of time before finally decaying, if you want this kind of different function, then, although the self-nature of candles and vases are different, this does not establish that the function of moments is different, and you have already established that candles are momentary, using this as an example, to establish that other phenomena such as vases are momentary, because that metaphor is also like using a candle when establishing a candle, and using a cow when establishing a cow, the same self-nature cannot be used as a metaphor, other things with different self-natures, the function or the dharma to be established is the same, just like saying that the sun is as hot as fire, and the cow is like a non-cow, although the self-characteristics of vases and candles are different, there is no difference in the general characteristic of being momentary impermanence, so it can be established. It is impossible for some dharmas to perish in an instant and some to exist for a while and then perish later just because the appearances are different, because there is no difference in the fact that all phenomena perish in an instant. In addition, according to your wishes, the essence of a candle is not momentary, but exists, and then it produces sequential momentary flames, pillars, vases, etc. are not momentary, but exist in their own nature, then, in the periods of last year, this year, next year, etc., different results such as pouring water and supporting the ridge beam will not occur, you think so, right? Therefore, I ask you this, if a person rides a horse to another place, does the horse stay there without going anywhere, while the person goes to another place? They would say that such a thing is impossible in the world, so they do not admit it, that the person and the horse go to another place together. In response to this, if according to your wishes, the essence of the candle is not momentary, but exists, then the flame
