The earth, Mount Sumeru, and the four continents were formed from the foam of water, thus the earth element arose from water and "I". Thus, both cause and effect arising from cause are momentary. Observing the four types of changes in earth: Observing the changes in the differences of karma: Sentient beings, gods who have accumulated virtuous karma, perceive the earth as soft and smooth as cotton; hell beings who have committed evil deeds, appear to see a ground of burning hot iron, as well as cliffs, thorns, and various sources of suffering. On the earth in the human realm, crops and the like do not grow when it is not cultivated or worked by hand; once it is worked by hand, good crops grow, this is the first change. Being struck by hammers and hoes, holes and depressions appear, this is the second change. Being burned by fire or washed away by water, becoming high and low, and being destroyed by moisture, etc., are the third change caused by the earth element. The change caused by time is: When times are good, the earth also becomes the cause of growing good grains, etc.; when times are bad, it causes bad things to grow; summer grasses and the like grow green, and in winter they turn yellow and change into cold and other properties; some places that were once monasteries later became villages, becoming very lively and crowded; some places that were once villages are now monasteries, etc., appearing differently before and after, this is the fourth change. Thus, these four changes are also changes that arise from the continuum of moments, and not every moment has a different form. For the permanent essence that is not momentary, it is never possible to observe change, therefore, since different forms arise in the moments before and after, that is why such a scene appears, therefore, the earth element is also established as momentary. Color, smell, taste, and touch are similar to those arising from the four elements, therefore, the four, such as color, are also similar to the earth element, and are established by the reasoning that proves the momentariness of phenomena. Fire depends on firewood, its function is that it burns when there is firewood, and does not burn when there is no firewood, fire is large when the firewood is large, and small when it is small, therefore it is established as momentary. Fire momentary

Just as lightning is not permanent, firewood is also momentary. Firewood gradually burns and produces fire. If it exists like the previous firewood and produces fire, then how can both fire and firewood be exhausted? When the firewood is exhausted, the fire cannot exist. Therefore, as long as the cause exists, the two of them produce the effect, which is fire, in the sequence of the moment of cause and the moment of effect. If there is no cause, the effect, which is fire, will not appear. Therefore, all things appear in the continuous cycle of cause and effect. When talking about the arising of the four fires, it was said that originally, one should have talked about face, color, etc. first, but fire was mentioned after color, etc. If one feels that the order is inappropriate, then no matter how it is said, there is no contradiction in meaning. It is just that it was said in this way for the convenience of the combination and arrangement of words. Moreover, all things that arise and will arise are born and cease momentarily with their own similar predecessors as the cause and the latter as the effect. The example of fire and firewood is also to illustrate this principle. Some say that sound is permanent because its continuation is not permanent like color, etc. Sound is permanent during the time it is emitted, not momentary. It is not like that, because through the author's effort, etc., the continuation of the sound becomes louder and louder. The sound emitted by bells, etc. also becomes smaller and smaller, so it can be proved to be momentary. If the sound does not disappear, there is no moment in one sound, then it is unreasonable to become louder and smaller, so sound is momentary, just like a person makes a sound from his mouth through effort, and speaks words in sequence, which are born and cease in sequence. The non-revealing form of the Dharmadhatu, such as the precepts of Pratimoksha and the Samadhi of non-outflow, etc., the non-revealing form of body and speech also follows the mind, because they do not depend on the cause, which is the mind, they will not arise. The cause, which is the mind, is impermanent, so the effect, which is the non-revealing form, is also momentary. For the sake of questioning, it means that although worldly people and heretics believe that all conditioned things will eventually perish and are impermanent, they always believe that it is not momentary but their own essence until they have personally seen the destruction of people dying and vases breaking, etc.
