The phrase "birth in an image" refers to the fact that practitioners who meditate on the eight liberations and so forth, through the power of their samadhi, images of blue, yellow, white, red, and other colors and shapes appear vividly in the realm of the mind. However, the appearance of these images is due to the power of the mind's familiarity with samadhi, and these images are also impermanent because they appear later after not existing before, and this is also established as momentary because it comes from the mind's momentary continuum gradually becoming familiar. From this, it can be known that all clear appearances arising from familiarity, such as dreams and impure things, are merely appearances of the mind and are impermanent. Thus, from the first birth to the birth of an image, it should be known that these fourteen types of birth are all impermanent and momentary. The first birth is the cause of the arising of other states such as wriggling, so it is established as momentary. If the subsequent states change in sequence and there is no other cause, then they cannot change because there is no cause. Therefore, from the first moment of birth, moments arise in sequence, so there is the state of wriggling, and from that arises squirming and so on, with the earlier and earlier being the cause and the later and later being the nature of the result, arising and ceasing without interruption. The words "and" all have the meaning of connecting with the latter, so there is no need to explain them specifically. The so-called "birth of gradual growth" refers to the fact that the differences in size, shape, and form, etc., are different, so they change momentarily. Similarly, if the body were permanent, then there should be no change from the first time, so it would be meaningless for food and so on to make the body grow, but this is not reasonable because it is undeniable that food and so on make the body grow. Therefore, it is established as momentary impermanence. The arising of eye consciousness and so on, relying on the objects of their respective sense faculties, is reasonable for the impermanence of momentary nature, but if it were permanent, then it would not be possible to rely on them, because the permanent does not need to rely on any cause, and the permanent cannot produce other results. However, if the consciousness of the eye and so on does not arise without relying on the sense faculties, then both the sense faculty that is relied upon and the consciousness that relies on it are established as momentary impermanence.

If one thinks, "What contradiction is there if, like the independent senses, the impermanent consciousness that relies on them arises?" Just as there are no horses or other mounts if there is no rider, so too, it is impossible for the consciousness that is relied upon to change into something else without the support remaining constant and unchanging. Just as when the cloth that is relied upon burns, the blue color that relies on it also burns, so too, there is no difference between the support and what is supported in the nature of impermanence. And since it is undeniably established that the forms of the body change due to attachment and so on, and that childhood and youth and so on arise in other and other states of complete maturation, it is impossible to observe such changes and maturation in what is permanent, because it is impossible for any state of a thing to produce another form, therefore it is established as momentary. If one thinks, "What contradiction is there if it does not change momentarily, but remains constant for a while?" It is very contradictory. If the first moment does not perish, but remains as it is, then it will always remain as it was in the initial state, and will never change in the end. Because the first moment has no other state, so too in all subsequent moments. If all things without difference become merely permanent, that is also very unreasonable, because things are never observed to be permanent by their very nature at any time. If one thinks, "For how long do things remain unchanged and permanent, and then cease?" If things remain unchanged and permanent for a moment, a short time, a day, a month, a year, or even an eon, and then cease, then the length of time of cessation is unreasonable, because all things will remain constant like the moment of their first arising, and will never become the moment of destruction. If the thing that arises first and the thing that is destroyed are the same, then the thing that arises first will also perish at the moment of arising like the moment of destruction, or why will the thing that is destroyed not remain for as long as the moment of the first arising? Because it is assumed that the two are the same. Therefore, from the moment of first arising to the moment of final destruction, the length of time that exists is the amount by which it is established by inference that there are other and other moments. The first does not perish, the last does not
