Due to the influence of the imprints left behind, there is no external object other than what appears, and there is no independent external object that does not arise from the accumulation of karma by the mind. Thus, since the cause is the momentary mind, the resultant conditioned phenomena are also established as momentary. How is it known that conditioned phenomena are the result of the mind? If the mind is momentary, how can it be known that conditioned phenomena are also momentary? The answer is that these four subsequent reasons are shown: because of being seized, because of being the master or controller, because of purity, and because of following sentient beings. Among these, 'because of being seized' means that the five senses and their bases, that is, the body including the physical form, are produced from being seized by consciousness, and therefore are established as the result of the mind. How is it seized? In the mother's womb, consciousness enters and faints; when it seizes, then from the parents' semen and blood, soft and sticky things and so on are first produced, and then the body with its senses is completely formed. If consciousness enters the semen and blood and does not mix with it and faint, then the stages of soft things and so on will not appear in any way. Therefore, the body follows the mind and is completely seized by the mind. The sutra says, 'Good man, if consciousness does not faint in the mother's womb, it will not turn into soft things and so on from the parents' impure matter.' Furthermore, if the mind is harmed, the body will also be harmed; if the mind is happy, the body will also be well and happy, therefore the body follows the mind; if separated from the mind, the body will become without sensation and rot. Therefore, because the mind seizes, conditioned phenomena are the result of the mind. 'Because of being the master' means that the mind exercises power over or becomes the master of conditioned phenomena, therefore it is the result of the mind. How does it become the master? The Blessed One said, 'This world is led by the mind, it is drawn by the mind.' This means that whatever the mind thinks, the body follows it, therefore it is led and drawn by it. When desire arises in the mind, the body also follows it, and the characteristics of acting frivolously or arrogantly, smiling and laughing, and so on appear.
