The so-called "without cause" means: Some others argue that things do not need other causes to exist for a certain period of time. As long as they have already been produced, they will exist until they encounter the cause of destruction. Once they encounter the cause of destruction, they will be destroyed. For example, blue iron exists for a certain period of time without heat. Once it encounters fire, the blue and cool will disappear, and red and heat will be produced. Another example is that a clay pot will exist until it encounters a hammer. Once it encounters a hammer, the pot will break and turn into pieces. It is unreasonable for them to say this, because things are naturally destroyed, and there is no other cause of destruction. If there is no other cause, for example, when a stone is thrown into the air, there is a cause for throwing it into the air, such as a hand, etc., but no other cause is needed to make it fall to the ground, just as it falls naturally by itself. After things are produced by their respective causes of production, they are immediately destroyed naturally, and no other cause is needed. The blue of iron and the shape of a pot are naturally destroyed every moment, even before encountering fire and a hammer. Therefore, they are not destroyed by fire and a hammer. The last moment of iron and a pot is taken as the proximate cause, and fire and a hammer are taken as the co-occurring condition, and the state of red and pieces is produced. Only at this time is it considered that the red of iron and the pot are destroyed. Thinking that they are constant before this is an illusion of the uninterrupted continuation of similar kinds, and it is not real. If you draw on iron and a pot, you think that is not the cause of destruction. However, the state of unpainted iron and a pot disappears, and the state of painting is obtained. This is also the characteristic of the impermanence of iron and a pot known by the wise. Therefore, due to the difference in causes, things become various different forms. Although similar kinds are produced continuously due to the similarity of causes, there is no difference between the two for non-momentary things. Because for non-momentary things, it is never possible to observe the difference in different states. Similarly, boiling water with fire until it dries up, and turning a pot into pieces and grinding it into powder, etc., all of these are considered to be the cause of destruction. If you observe carefully, you will find that things are momentary, condition

Because of the aggregation of other causes and conditions, different states arise, and it is not that things are not momentary, but rather that there is no destruction by other factors. This is like a potter creating a vase from clay with his hands and tools. When the vase is produced, the state of the clay does not disappear on its own, and the activity of the hands and so on also ceases. Furthermore, what is it that the destructive cause destroys? Is it the essence of the thing itself that does not perish, or is it the essence that perishes? If it does not perish, then the destructive cause cannot destroy it; if it perishes on its own, then there is no need for a destructive cause to destroy it. Moreover, when the destructive cause destroys a certain thing, does it destroy the thing itself, or does it destroy something different from it? If it destroys the thing itself, then it is creation, not destruction; if it destroys something different from the thing, then nothing has been done to the thing, just as making cloth does not destroy a pillar. The so-called "for the sake of determining characteristics" means that the characteristic of all compounded things is necessarily impermanence, and there is no difference such as some compounded things being permanent, some being impermanent, some being both permanent and impermanent, and some being neither permanent nor impermanent. Therefore, the Blessed One also stated in general that all compounded things are impermanent. If things are temporarily permanent and then impermanent, then it is impossible to become both permanent and impermanent. Therefore, all compounded things cannot transcend the nature of momentary destruction, just as the nature of fire is heat. The so-called "for the sake of following" refers to others who say that if all things are momentarily impermanent, then things are new, and if things are different, then how can one recognize "this is the thing previously seen" when one later sees the thing previously seen? Therefore, they say that the thing previously seen exists until it is destroyed. To this, even if you are not the same thing as before and after, you are mistaken for the same thing because the similarity continues uninterruptedly. It is like a magician quickly throwing many stones into the sky and then repeatedly collecting them in his hand, making people think that the same stone is being repeatedly thrown and collected. The same is true of rivers, in which the previous ones flow elsewhere in each moment, and the new ones
