This should be done. May I attain the supreme and excellent essence of unsurpassed wisdom, and accordingly, make confession, rejoice, request, and dedicate merit. There are two means to accomplish activities: dharani and samadhi. Dharani, by holding the words and meanings of the Dharma without forgetting, accomplishes activities for one's own benefit. Samadhi, through displaying various miraculous powers, accomplishes activities for the benefit of others. Skillful in not interrupting the continuity of the path is not interrupting the lineage of the Tathagatas, which is the path of non-abiding nirvana, namely wisdom and compassion. Wisdom does not abide in the extreme of samsara, and compassion does not abide in the extreme of peace. Furthermore, generating the two minds of conventional and ultimate truth in conjunction, both methods are complete, and all others are implicitly included therein. Therefore, mastering one skillful means is sufficient. Thus, these five skillful means pervade the aspirations and practices of Bodhisattvas and all ten bhumis, not falling into the lesser vehicle, but are the means to accomplish the path and fruit of the Great Vehicle. They are unlike the means of worldly beings and Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Relying on such skillful means, Bodhisattvas easily accomplish all benefits for themselves and others. Secondly, dharani is the complete retention of all the words and meanings of the scriptures without loss, through the special means of mindfulness and wisdom, and the appearance in the mind of previously unheard teachings and meanings, and the attainment of the dharmas of the path to enlightenment. Obtaining dharani is also due to accumulating the merits of asking about the holy Dharma, making offerings, upholding, and reciting in other lifetimes, which lead to the attainment of dharani. Therefore, being able to fully grasp the words and meanings of any Dharma taught once is the dharani arising from maturation. In this life, by becoming accustomed to hearing many teachings from many virtuous spiritual friends, one does not forget and retains the words and meanings of the Dharma taught by Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Khenpos, Acharyas, etc. This is the dharani of being accustomed to hearing. Whoever, through the power of being accustomed to any samadhi such as emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, etc., towards the Dharma

That which can be retained by merely hearing is called the dharani of samadhi. The dharani arising from vipaka and hearing is small, while the dharani arising from samadhi is great. The great dharani also has three types: that which arises from the practice of samadhi by those who are not yet on the ground of the wise noble ones, the followers of faith, is small; that of those who have entered the ground of the noble ones but abide in the seven impure grounds is intermediate; and the dharani of those who abide in the three pure grounds is great. These are the divisions of dharani. The function of dharani is that bodhisattvas, again and again, without interruption, rely properly on these three dharanis, such as vipaka, and constantly teach the sacred Dharma to others, and they themselves also retain its words and meanings. The third is aspiration, which is steadfast. The aspiration of bodhisattvas is to think of the fruit of whatever they desire, such as great bodhi, and to have the desire to pursue its meaning. This is also driven by the wisdom that knows well the object of aspiration. It is not like wishing for contaminated things for oneself, but rather the mind is driven by special wisdom, and one rejoices in it and makes aspirations in words, which is the cause or essence of aspiration. Here, wisdom arises from the cause of non-discriminating wisdom, or dedicating oneself to obtaining that wisdom is what is driven by wisdom, as stated in the great commentary. By the phrase "unequaled in all grounds," the ground of aspiration is shown, that is, the aspiration of bodhisattvas in all stages of faith and the ten grounds is not equal to the aspiration of worldly beings or shravakas and pratyekabuddhas. The benefit of aspiration is that it should be known that aspiration is the cause of accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others. That is, it accomplishes the benefit of oneself and others in this life, and it also accomplishes the benefit of oneself and others in future lives. Even though no other action is done from the body and speech for that purpose, merely from the mind of aspiration, it is accomplished as desired. Therefore, from how the mind desires and aspires, one can immediately see its Dharma.
