To explain the specific qualities of the pāramitās, there are two aspects: a concise statement and a detailed explanation. First, the main point and its causes, etc., in one verse: Exertion is the supreme among the pāramitās, and the reason for it, the distinctions of exertion in terms of action, the distinctions of aspects, the distinctions of support, and the distinctions of the antidotes to the four kinds of obstacles. Thus, the Tathāgatas have well taught that exertion should be fully understood. Second, the detailed explanation: First, among all meritorious and virtuous dharmas, exertion is the most excellent. Second, stating the reason for it: Why is it excellent? Because by relying on exertion, one subsequently obtains those collections of virtuous dharmas. Without exertion, one cannot obtain any white dharmas or collections of virtue. The size of the collection depends on the size of the exertion, because it is obtained by it. Meditation and wisdom destroy afflictions, so are they not the most excellent? Although they are, they do not arise without exertion. Therefore, from the perspective that exertion is the cause of all virtuous dharmas, it is the most excellent. Third, the distinctions of function: By merely initiating exertion, one immediately achieves the supreme state of dwelling happily in the present dharma. Even ordinary people, by striving for methods to pacify diseases and eliminate poverty, see the results in this life. Similarly, by striving in śamatha and vipaśyanā, one obtains the qualities of meditation and insight as visible dharmas in this life. Through exertion, one accomplishes all mundane and supramundane qualities in this life and the next. By the exertion of practicing the ten virtuous actions of the world, one obtains the blissful results of gods and humans who enjoy desirable pleasures in existence. By merely initiating exertion in the samādhi of the form realm, one obtains birth in the realms of the four dhyānas and the four formless realms, because the afflictions of the lower desire realm are not completely purified but are highly mutable. By the exertion of meditating on the four truths and the meaning of dependent origination, one transcends the view of the aggregates and obtains the liberation of the nirvāṇa of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.

bo. By exerting diligence in the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, one will attain supreme enlightenment and become a Buddha. Third, the distinctions of types are: Furthermore, diligence endowed with the four right abandonments is that which pacifies evil that has arisen and prevents evil that has not arisen from arising, thereby eliminating faults; diligence that generates virtue that has not arisen and increases virtue that has arisen is the path of accumulation. Diligence endowed with the five faculties is the power of liberation, that is, diligence that has power over liberation; diligence of the five powers is other diligence that abandons unfavorable sides; at the time of perfect enlightenment, it is diligence that thoroughly enters into suchness; at the time of the eight noble paths, it is right effort, the noble path is the cause of transforming the place completely, and diligence in practicing the perfections. It is the great meaning diligence of attaining Buddhahood, because it is superior to the diligence of hearers and solitary realizers, it is defined by the difference of "great meaning." Furthermore, the diligence of initially having a virtuous intention is the diligence of reverence; thereafter, the diligence of properly applying oneself to virtue as vowed is the diligence of constant application, which can be divided into two from the perspective of essence. And diligence that does not shrink from accomplishing the vast path result; diligence that is not overcome by unfavorable sides; diligence that is not satisfied with antidotes. All the various types of diligence have been extensively taught by the Buddhas. Fourth, from the perspective of the basis, diligence on the path of the three vehicles relies on the individuals of hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas. In sequence, because they possess weak intention, wisdom, and vast wisdom, the three divisions of inferior, middling, and superior diligence are also from the perspective of other bases. The first two of these three only engage in self-benefit, so they are of small meaning, and the latter engages in accomplishing both self and other benefits, so it is considered diligence of great meaning. Sixth, from the perspective of the antidote to the four obstacles, there is the obstacle of declining resources, the obstacle of afflictions,

The method of diligently eliminating the four obstacles caused by laziness, namely, the loss of wealth and merit, is as follows: Those who are diligent are not defeated by wealth because they strive to acquire it. Those who are diligent are not defeated by afflictions because they cultivate methods to counteract them. Those who are diligent are not discouraged by the arising of acts such as generosity because they possess tireless diligence. Those who are diligent are not discouraged by obtaining any qualities because they accomplish everything through the power of diligence up to the state of Buddhahood. Tenth, the perfections (pāramitā) are mutually inclusive, with each containing the others, and therefore need to be mutually ascertained. This is explained through a single verse, "Because they are mutually inclusive," etc.: Although generosity and the others are distinct from their respective opposing aspects, they are mutually inclusive because everything else is contained within a single entity. One can also be divided into six parts. By nature, wherever there is any one of the perfections such as generosity, all the others are necessarily present as well. Generosity and the others are the cause or condition for the other perfections. Through these four reasons, it should be understood that the six perfections are mutually determined in every way. So, how are they mutually inclusive? In generosity, there is also the abandonment of miserliness, the acceptance of generosity itself, and the discipline of accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings. At the time of generosity, being able to endure slander and renounce pleasures is a part of patience. Being delighted in giving and constantly diligent is diligence. Focusing the mind on one point and not being controlled by the distractions of opposing factors is meditation. Understanding the nature of the Dharma of generosity, such as its purity and impurity, is wisdom. Having attained the Samadhi of the Treasury of Space, generosity is meditation, and the Dharma of generosity contained therein is wisdom. Furthermore, the generosity perfection of a Bodhisattva is seized by non-conceptual wisdom, and therefore possesses the wisdom of realizing suchness; the remaining perfections should also be understood in this way. Discipline is also included within the collection of virtuous Dharmas, and all the perfections are contained within it, and it is able to accomplish everything.
