Since various unfavorable factors can become obstacles to practice, one must first examine the location and act cautiously, and not start practicing arbitrarily. Relying on a noble spiritual friend is the supreme cause of all virtues, so what are the characteristics of a noble spiritual friend? Any Bodhisattva who has entered the Mahayana, who has heard a great deal of scriptural teachings, who has understood the truths of realization, and who has seen their meaning, who is skilled in speaking or explaining the Dharma to others, who is loving to others, and who is not tired of doing things for others, such a noble person, know that they are a great spiritual friend worthy of reliance. So how does one make good aspirations for oneself? The practitioner himself must pursue the Mahayana Dharma, taking the three wisdoms as the goal, which is a good goal; not being satisfied with small roots of virtue, but striving to accumulate merit and wisdom as much as possible, which is a good reliance; when the mind is scattered and agitated, considering this a fault, remembering the signs of calm abiding, which is abandonment; when the mind is depressed and dull, thinking about the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, the benefits of Samadhi, and the self and general characteristics of all phenomena, raising the mind's strength, which is cultivating the signs of Vipassana, thereby abandoning depression; when there is neither depression nor agitation, then in this state cultivate the sign of equanimity, abiding without moving, like this, the three signs of calm abiding, insight, and equanimity are good methods for yogis, and one must possess these; not being satisfied with one's own stage, but making the grounds and paths higher and higher, or completely entering, which is good; constantly entering the path through the gate of calm abiding and insight, which is the nature of a good combination. Like this, for the meaning of possessing the five good natures, to devote oneself wholeheartedly or to have the armor of aspiration, this is to make good aspirations for oneself. Due to the merit accumulated in the past, in this life one dwells in such a suitable place, encountering spiritual friends and the Dharma, etc., and the mind obtains joy; having abandoned the eight non-freedoms, one has obtained leisure; the body is without illness.

The cause of these five functions, which are the ability to combine with the earth element, the samadhi that the mind is capable of, and the wisdom that distinguishes the meaning of the two truths, is the merit accumulated in previous lifetimes. Now, its fruit appears, and like fire in smoke, it is certainly the merit of the past. Secondly, the essence of the practice of the Mahayana is the wisdom of non-objectification and the great compassion of not abandoning all sentient beings. Therefore, to explain it, a brief instruction is given first, and then it is explained again in detail, divided into two. First, with the three verses beginning with "The realm of Dharma is," it is shown that the wisdom of non-objectification does not intentionally abandon afflictions by viewing samsara as a fault. With the two verses beginning with "For the sake of sentient beings," it is shown that abandoning sentient beings and entering tranquility alone contradicts the practice of the Mahayana. If these are explained together, the Hinayana practitioners believe that afflictions are inherently existent, and by abandoning them through the path, they are exhausted and Nirvana is attained. Therefore, with the strong thought of clinging to samsara and Nirvana as faults and virtues, they abandon samsara and enter tranquility. However, because afflictions themselves have no inherent nature, Bodhisattvas are given liberation by the afflictions themselves. By virtue of having the skillful means of non-conceptual wisdom, although they do not completely abandon samsara, they are not defiled by the faults of samsara, and they practice the conduct of Bodhisattvas. Ultimately, they attain Nirvana that does not abide in existence or peace. Therefore, the way of realizing the equality of samsara and Nirvana through non-conceptual wisdom without objectification is taught. As it is said in the Hundred Thousand Prajnaparamita Sutra: "I do not say that there is any other liberation from desire other than desire," and the same is said of hatred and delusion. The meaning is that only desire can liberate from desire, not other liberations, and it has such a secret meaning, because there is no other dharma other than the realm of Dharma itself, because the reality or essence or nature of all dharmas is determined to be only the realm of Dharma as such, and there is not even a particle of dharma that exists differently from it. Therefore, the Buddhas declare liberation from desire and so on.

Considering that greed and so on are those, it is said in this way. Like this, if one recognizes that the nature of afflictions is inherently completely pure, and knows that afflictions themselves can self-liberate afflictions, then there is no need to seek other antidotes. If one thinks that there is an affliction that cannot be liberated by its own nature, then no one can liberate it, and it cannot be abandoned. Therefore, just as in the sutras of definitive meaning of the Nominal Vehicle, it is proclaimed that all dharmas are inherently without bondage and liberation. It is also the same in the Resultant Vajra Vehicle. In the second chapter of the Hevajra Tantra, the chapter on pure yoga, it says, "It must be said that the purity of all things is suchness," and so on, and "Self-awareness itself is purity, purity is not liberated by others," and so on. The meaning of these sayings is the same, there is no difference. Similarly, saying that ignorance and bodhi are the same is also because there is no other dharma other than the Dharmadhatu. Therefore, all afflictions are shown to be the nature of self-nature bodhi. Wise Bodhisattvas recognize that the Buddha's intention is like this, so they also think like this. As it is said in the sutras, afflictions are the basis of bodhi vajra, and so on. If afflictions themselves must be liberated from afflictions, then why can't all sentient beings who practice afflictions be liberated? This is because the meaning is not understood as it is. They are bound because they do not understand the suchness of greed and so on, and are attached to their characteristics. Because Bodhisattvas understand that the suchness of greed and so on is the nature of the Dharmadhatu, and enter into it as it is, therefore, they can be liberated from ordinary self-characteristics. Therefore, greed and so on can definitely be liberated from greed and so on. Because one does not cling to the things and characteristics of greed and so on, attachment and hatred will not arise. Afterwards, recognizing the nature of greed and so on, realizing the meaning of being originally exhausted and originally unborn, one can obtain the great bodhi of the wisdom of realizing exhaustion and non-arising.
