Birds are more attached than other animals, so they are extremely loving and attached to their own offspring. From the time the egg is laid until the feathers and wings are fully grown, they closely embrace their young, covering them with their bodies and wings. Such love is completely contrary to anger arising towards one's own offspring, so anger does not arise. Similarly, a loving Bodhisattva is the same towards other sentient beings who are like children. Because they desire happiness, they are loving, and therefore it is contradictory to generate anger, the root of harmful intent. Because they desire the pacification of sentient beings' afflictions and suffering, it is contradictory to engage in harmful intent that causes suffering. Because they desire to benefit sentient beings with their own body and possessions, it is contradictory to engage in deceitful thoughts that seek to deceive sentient beings. Because Bodhisattvas bring joy and happiness to sentient beings, and their appearance and non-appearance protect from fear, it is contradictory to cause fear and terror through beatings and the like. Therefore, from the depths of one's heart, with genuine love and great compassion that is free from hypocrisy, not abandoning all sentient beings, and with non-discriminating wisdom abandoning attachment to the appearance of samsara and nirvana as distinct, the practice of a Bodhisattva is supreme. Third, the method of how to practice is shown by example: Like a sick person to good medicine. The explanation extends from "Like a sick person to good medicine" to "Where does one want to practice?" A Bodhisattva, for the sake of unsurpassed enlightenment, consciously takes birth in samsara, fully accepting samsara without attachment, eliminating the suffering of sentient beings and accomplishing benefit and happiness. Just as sick people diligently rely on good medicine that cures disease. Although knowing the suffering of samsara, they accept it, just as knowing the bitterness of medicine, they diligently rely on it to cure disease. Because they accept samsara, in order to pacify all the diseases of the two obscurations, they enter into samsara in order to attain the great enlightenment that spontaneously accomplishes the two benefits. They enter into samsara, but do not abandon samsara. To a weak and suffering patient, a doctor is compassionate.

Those with excellent Bodhicitta, like administering medicine combined with illness, in order to pacify the disease of afflictions in sentient beings, administer the medicine of the excellent Dharma, and accomplish various beneficial deeds. Just as one trains an unruly servant, using whips and other means to make him obedient when he does not do as he is told, similarly, when one's own mind is controlled by afflictions and becomes arrogant, or when one becomes weary of the affairs of sentient beings, one should diligently cut off one's own evil thoughts through proper reflection. This is like the example of taming a horse in the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels. Just as merchants who transform small goods into huge profits in order to raise children and retinues, relying on the enjoyments of desire that they possess, they accomplish the qualities of the five desires and perfect enjoyments with the goods of generosity, and completely give them to all sentient beings, accomplishing benefit and happiness, this is accomplishing generosity. Just as dyers diligently wash clothes and repeatedly apply dye, one diligently purifies the ten non-virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind, and diligently cultivates the ten virtuous actions, this is discipline. Just as a young and strong son, even if he commits various minor faults of unrestrained behavior, the father does not get angry but generates love, similarly, with patience, even if sentient beings commit various sins due to ignorance, one does not retaliate, does not get angry, but increases compassion. Just as one rubs a fire drill to obtain fire, and strives continuously without interruption until the fire arises, similarly, until one reaches the ultimate of virtue, one does not abandon the middle, but constantly cultivates with great diligence. Just as one entrusts a storehouse and all possessions to a trustworthy person, even though he can take them at will, he does not take even a little for his own benefit, similarly, a Bodhisattva, although striving to perfect the training of higher mind, concentration, when it is not yet complete, does not taste the flavor of meditative absorption.

Thus it is done. Just as magicians, with the mantras and collections of substances of magic, conjure up various things such as horses and cattle to appear, but it is known that this is merely an appearance of magic, and is not truly established. Similarly, even though Bodhisattvas accomplish the perfections, they cultivate the union of the two truths with the wisdom that fully knows the nature of all knowable things. Thus, those explanations that combine example and meaning are how Bodhisattvas wish to accomplish the example and where they wish to accomplish the meaning. Third, summarizing the meaning. As stated above, like this, constantly possessing great diligence in practicing the immeasurable perfections, striving to ripen the two accumulations or oneself and others, this is gradually from the path of accumulation removing the defilements of afflictive and cognitive obscurations, with the supreme wisdom of non-conceptualization in the three spheres, accomplishing the ultimate of the ten grounds, this is going forth to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Thus ends the explanation of the fourteenth chapter, the chapter on accomplishment, from the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras. Fourteenth Chapter: The Chapter on Accomplishing Benefit.
