Just as the nature of the sky is pure, with and without clouds, and gold freed from ore is also originally without impurities, yet there appear to be two states, with and without impurities. Similarly, the fact that one's own mind, though pure, appears impure is also the same. That is to say, the nature or reality of the mind is always naturally pure and luminous. That mind is not inherently inseparable from its own nature, but is defiled by sudden faults, such as attachment and other unwholesome thoughts and afflictions. Therefore, other than the mind of the luminous nature of reality, which cannot be stained by defilements, other thoughts or unreal thoughts are not luminous. The stainless mind of the nature of reality or luminous wisdom is called the nature or reality of the mind, which is the union of clarity and emptiness. Second, the loving-kindness and compassion that never abandon sentient beings: Bodhisattvas towards sentient beings, like a mother towards her only beloved child, are not artificial, but from the depths of their hearts great love, so they always think of benefiting sentient beings, so they will never abandon sentient beings. In order to benefit sentient beings, the Bodhisattva's attachment to the object of sentient beings does not become a downfall or fault, because this attachment does not arise from regarding sentient beings as mine and wanting to abandon them. Abiding in this loving-kindness and generating the mind of enlightenment is completely contrary to being angry with sentient beings, because anger leads to abandoning and harming them. Therefore, it is said in the sutras that the fault of a Bodhisattva arising from attachment has occurred for countless eons, while the fault of arising from a moment of anger is greater, because embracing sentient beings with loving-kindness is said to be attachment to sentient beings, which is not defilement. Like the attachment of a householder Bodhisattva to his children and wife, etc., is not contrary to loving-kindness, so this attachment does not produce any downfall of the Bodhisattva.
