It is called having faith or not having faith. In the first ground, for the faith that becomes the cause of realizing the Dharmadhatu, in the place of faithful conduct, the faith that possesses the accumulation of the two accumulations for one countless kalpa is called the faith of accumulating accumulations. The faith that does not possess such accumulations is called the faith of not accumulating accumulations. In general, depending on whether or not accumulations are accumulated, faith in the Mahayana becomes vast or small, stable or unstable. The faith of the bodhisattvas from the first to the seventh ground is called the faith of entering into stability, because their faith does not diminish or decline. The faith of the bodhisattvas who reside on the pure grounds from the eighth to the tenth ground is called the faith that has gone far, because they possess the spontaneously accomplished faith of non-discrimination, and it is said that it has gone far from the place of appearance-based discrimination and effort. Thus, the two verses show the categories of faith. Secondly, the sixteen dharmas that obstruct faith are shown by three verses, such as non-attention. If non-attention to faith in the Dharma increases, it obstructs the faith that arises from it. Although faith has arisen many times in the past and present, if it is not maintained and not paid attention to, that faith will disappear. Laziness obstructs the arising of faith that has not arisen, because faith does not arise in the lazy who do not strive to generate faith. What is called disturbed yoga is attachment to the object taken as the object aimed at in the faith generated in the past, and attachment to the object of grasping in the present faith. This obstructs the yoga of samadhi, which is proper attention without attachment to the object of grasping and the object of being grasped. Therefore, it is said to obstruct the faith of the grasped and the faith of the grasper. Bad friends, that is, sinful friends, non-virtuous spiritual friends, are obstacles to the faith taken from friends. That is, the faith previously taken from virtuous friends is wasted by the sinful friends showing non-dharma, or the faith arising from the teachings of virtuous friends to those who are controlled by sinful friends.

Because there is no place of birth. Weak accumulation of merit will hinder the self-nature of faith, even if the self-nature has the seed of lineage and faith, if it does not accumulate a lot of merit, the self-nature will not generate faith in Mahayana Buddhism and so on. Thinking improperly with the image of permanence, bliss, purity, and self will hinder the unerring faith, because it cannot properly understand impermanence and so on. Negligence will hinder the present or direct faith, because direct faith arises from the causes of non-greed, non-hatred, non-ignorance, and diligence. These four causes are called non-negligence, and the four of greed, hatred, ignorance, and laziness are called negligence, so it will hinder in this way. Only hearing the sutras of provisional meaning, and not hearing the teachings of definitive meaning such as emptiness, like this, hearing little that speaks of temporary meaning, will hinder the faith arising from words, because the meaning of what has not been heard is not understood, so faith will not arise in it, and those who have not heard the definitive meaning will be afraid of the profound meaning of emptiness and so on and will not generate faith. Thinking that there is no need to think and practice, and that hearing alone is enough, and thinking that there is no need for extensive hearing, and that hearing any little teaching is enough, these will hinder the seeking faith. Because in this way, the faith led by the wisdom arising from thinking will not arise, or even if it arises a little, it cannot arise extensively and ultimately completely, and even if thinking about the meaning of hearing or thinking a little, it is not thinking extensively, but thinking that thinking a little is enough, this will also hinder the seeking faith with the wisdom arising from thinking as before. In short, thinking that hearing and thinking a little is enough is an obstacle to not generating faith arising from thinking, or even if it arises a little, it cannot be well and completely fulfilled. The arrogance of mere tranquility, that is, clinging to the fact that mere tranquility is enough, and not generating insight, the arrogance of being satisfied with the tranquility of external distracting thoughts, will hinder the faith of view or the faith arising from meditation, because without insight, mere tranquility cannot realize the truth. Moreover, thinking that mere thinking is enough, and not combining it with practice, is also an obstacle to the faith of view.
