In general, these sixteen dharmas obscure faith and understanding in various ways, so they should be abandoned. Third, the eleven benefits of faith and understanding are: explained by the two verses "great merit" and so on. Present faith and understanding is that the great merit of faith in the Dharma increases immeasurably; past faith and understanding is that previous faith and understanding in the Mahayana Dharma was good, so there is no regret now. Regarding the object of grasping, not clinging to it as real, but grasping one aspect of its suchness, thereby obtaining the samadhi of realizing no self-nature, and the mind feels at ease; clinging to the faith and understanding of realizing no self-nature, possessing the great bliss of the supreme Dharma or the immediately following samadhi; in the faith and understanding that borrows help, if there is no obstacle of conditions, one can obtain the merit of not wasting virtue; in one's own faith and understanding, if there is no obstacle, the root of virtue will not decline but will be stable and, like the former, will not be mistaken. Regarding the seven kinds of faith and understanding: direct perception, verbal, seeking, observing, seizing, and unmixed, if they are not interrupted by opposing factors, then each of these respective faith and understandings will become more and more excellent, thereby obtaining merit, such as from the non-erroneous medium faith and understanding, the non-erroneous great faith and understanding will arise, and so on. If there is no obstacle to the faith and understanding that is not contrary and unmixed, then the dharmas will become manifest and realized, thereby obtaining the first ground. If there is no other obstacle to faith and understanding in the Hinayana, one can obtain the peaceful nirvana of one's own benefit; if faith and understanding in the Mahayana is free from obstacles, it will become the supreme of obtaining both one's own and others' benefit. Unobstructed. Diligent accumulation, abiding, and long-lasting, these five kinds of faith and understanding, if free from the obstacles of conditions, one can obtain the merit of quick clairvoyance. The first three can obtain the supreme of sharp faculties, and the latter two can quickly obtain the wisdom of omniscience. Thus, the eleven kinds of merits that have been explained are the benefits of faith and understanding. The six kinds of faith and understanding: mistaken, non-direct perception, future, obscured, non-diligent, and unaccumulated, have not been explained for their benefits, because for these faith and understandings, the possible benefits are all included in the various benefits of faith, and future faith and understanding is unarisen, and so on, and mistaken, and so on, are because they have obstacles. Thus, these benefits of faith and understanding each

Without distinguishing, in general, one should also understand the benefits of faith and generate faith accordingly. Third, explaining the specific aspirations of the Great Vehicle. The distinctions in aspiring to the Great Vehicle are illustrated with examples: The aspiration of sentient beings in the desire realm who are attached to the five external objects of desire and indulge in them is like that of a dog. The aspiration of those in the form realm who abandon external distractions through worldly meditative absorption and remain inwardly absorbed is like a turtle. The aspiration of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer who seeks to liberate themselves from the suffering of samsara is like a servant. The aspiration of a Bodhisattva who works for the benefit of all other sentient beings is like a king. Explaining its meaning in detail: How is it like a dog? A dog is always hungry, tormented by the suffering of a hungry mind and a lack of food, and has a mind that is never satisfied with food. How is it like a turtle? A turtle, when in water, retracts all its limbs inward for fear of being harmed by others. How is it like a servant of a king? A servant is always afraid of contradicting the mind and words of their master, and with a fearful body, diligently performs the tasks of their master. How is it like a king? A king, through their command, freely rules over the lands under their dominion. Similarly, like dogs, those in the desire realm are always distracted by external objects of desire, and because of their distraction, they are not independent and wander under the influence of desire. Fearing the distractions caused by the tastes of the two higher realms, they merely gather their minds and mental factors inward, and because they do not turn their minds towards the profound and vast Dharma of the nature of wisdom, their aspiration is like a turtle retracting. The Hearers, who are solely focused on benefiting themselves, are extremely afraid of the suffering of samsara. The method for liberation from samsara, the precepts established by the Tathagata, the King of Dharma, even a slight transgression of them will obstruct the path to liberation and result in undesirable consequences. Fearing this, they strive diligently for a swift liberation from samsara, and their aspiration is similar to that of servants. The aspiration of Bodhisattvas is: Like a king who has accumulated merit in the past and...
