Such a Bodhisattva who endures or accepts the intense suffering of extreme toil, if other beings harm him by killing him, etc., that Bodhisattva should not retaliate in kind, and would never do so. Therefore, one should have faith in generating the mind of enlightenment. Fourth, no matter what the circumstances of Bodhisattvas in this cycle of existence, they do not turn away from the practice of enlightenment: That Bodhisattva, through the power of the accumulation of wisdom and the accumulation of merit, realizes that all inner and outer phenomena are like illusions and dreams, and for the sake of sentient beings, takes birth in whatever state of gods and humans they desire. Abandoning the previous body and taking another birth is understood as going to a beautiful garden. In times of prosperity, even when becoming the ruler of gods and humans, there is no fear of being bound by afflictions such as attachment, as will be explained below. As mentioned above, it is because all phenomena are seen as illusions. Similarly, in times of decline, when abandoning the body and enjoyments of gods, etc., and facing death, this Bodhisattva does not have the fear of the suffering of abandoning the body and enjoyments, because he knows everything as illusion and knows that taking birth is like going to a garden. Therefore, no matter what the circumstances of Bodhisattvas, they do not fall away from the path of enlightenment, so it is appropriate to train in the path of enlightenment. Fifth, explaining in detail the meaning of understanding rebirth as going to a garden, as just mentioned: For example, gods and humans go to a delightful garden for four purposes: to bathe the body and adorn it with ornaments, to enjoy various banquet foods and drinks, to dwell in a delightful place, and to experience the joy of various games. Because they want to experience these four joys, their minds enter the garden and do not turn back. Similarly, Bodhisattvas continuously enter from one life to another, also because of their own qualities—generosity, ethics, retention, meditation, wisdom, and other qualities—they continuously increase their own continuum.

For the sake of adornment, and delighting in benefiting sentient beings in the place of birth, is like a feast of food. Wherever one is, to be born at will into whatever kind of body, is like dwelling in a supreme and delightful place. There, manifesting various magical displays with the five superknowledges, is like engaging in various amusements. Thus, bodhisattvas who repeatedly take birth in samsara are like worldly people going to a garden, experiencing the joy of having performed four activities: the joy adorned with the ornaments of qualities, the joy of a feast of food that benefits others, the joy of dwelling in a delightful supreme garden for the sake of others, and the joy of experiencing various magical feats. These four joys are not possessed by worldly people other than bodhisattvas who possess the nature of compassion, let alone the noble ones who are hearers and solitary realizers. Therefore, bodhisattvas who generate the mind of enlightenment should generate the mind of enlightenment because of their superior qualities. Sixth, it is explained that one is not deterred or discouraged by the suffering of giving away the body, etc. Because one realizes that all phenomena are without self, one is completely free from attachment to one's own benefit. In order to establish other sentient beings who do not realize this in the ultimate benefit and happiness of this life, one is constantly diligent in the six perfections. Because the suffering of others also causes suffering to oneself, this bodhisattva who possesses the nature of compassion, whenever it is for the benefit of others, even if he himself dwells in the Avici hell, he feels happy and joyful and does not generate the slightest weariness. How could such a person fear the suffering that arises from giving away the body and limbs, etc., for the sake of benefiting other sentient beings? This shows that one is able to endure intense suffering. According to the translation of the 'Wise Commentary', "due to the suffering that arises from relying on others," the meaning is the same. Thus, because bodhisattvas possess such extraordinary qualities, they are not afraid of any suffering in samsara and are always joyful.
