Like those with obsessive cleanliness, it cannot be established by valid cognition. Because it is merely established by internal conceptualization, and external phenomena cannot be independently established, the key lies in this. If so, would cause and effect be confused? The way it is not confused is, examining the appearance of dependent origination as a non-deceptive valid cognition, such as the heat of fire being established as valid cognition. For animals with obsessive cleanliness towards fire, it is not hot, poison can cause death or harm, and it is beneficial to peacocks, etc., are examples. Even the same water appears in various ways, and through meditation, even if immersed in fire, one will not be burned, and through mantras, fire will not be hot, etc. Through various dependent relationships, even the same object manifests various different functions. Actions, meditation, mantras, and miraculous powers can transform things into various forms, which is undeniable. This is because the key is that external phenomena or objects are not truly established. Because the way causes and conditions gather will cause various changes, therefore, examine how the nature of phenomena, action, and interdependence, these three, combine with how reason appears without deception. So, although non-virtuous actions generally produce suffering, due to the difference in circumstances, like some who say that violence is Dharma, will it produce happy results for some? If so, is cause and effect not deceptive? Killing and so on, from the aspect of performing actions that produce suffering results, are considered non-virtuous, and that itself is the cause of ripening on the mind. Even if it is labeled as virtue that produces happy results, it will not change because of that, just as the heat of fire is habitually labeled as not hot, but the heat will not disappear. If you say that like animals, there may be times when it is not hot, then, like killing, if life is not taken, it will not produce suffering results either. However, if life is taken, the bad ripening cannot be avoided either, just as not setting fire will not cause burning. Therefore, knowing that killing is killing, but mistakenly thinking that it will bring happy results, it will not bring happy results. Furthermore, the suffering felt by Bodhisattvas who cut off their bodies, etc., is happiness, and the happiness of kingship, etc., is also seen as suffering. No matter what the circumstances, the happiness and joy, suffering and unhappiness that actually appear in the mind itself are called happiness and unhappiness. Therefore, happiness and suffering will never be confused with each other. Similarly, poison is also like that.

It is not by the motivation of a mind with or without the three intentions that actions are established as virtuous or non-virtuous, nor is it by contemplating whether this is virtuous or evil. Therefore, the results of virtue and evil are never confused. Experiencing benefits from killing and eating meat, and feeling happy from killing enemies, etc., are present conditions, but the happiness and suffering caused by those conditions are not the ripened results of those conditions. Therefore, the cause and effect of virtue and evil are never deceptive, and the function of conditions follows whatever conditions are gathered, so there is no certainty of experiencing happiness and suffering. Because there is no certainty, the three—subject, property, and predicate—cannot be established, so there is no fault of being too extreme. If you think that because reasoning is uncertain, it becomes unreliable, it is not so. Because the nature of phenomena appearing in the field of appearance where any conditions are gathered is the reasoning of such a nature, and the reasoning of such a nature causing action, and the reasoning of dependence relying on causes, and the reasoning of correctly determining without error in this way, it will never change from that. Therefore, for external objects that are commonly seen, such as the moisture of water, or the color and shape that are slightly similar, they are established as commonly seen, and the difference between pure and impure is also distinguished. For humans, water, pus, and blood appear separately. For pretas, water itself appears as pus or blood, so without examining which is true, if it is asserted that there is no difference because it is the appearance of habit, there is a fault of the common object of perception being completely uncertain. If the appearance of habit is thoroughly examined, then it will never be established that any one of the things seen like water is true, so it will become the same. However, the validity of the way things appear is not contradictory, because whatever appears to each individual is established as infallible in their own view, and that alone is conventional validity. Even so, for a while, all water appears as pus to pretas, but the appearance of water is not completely eliminated, because there is an appearance of water. In general, in conventions, all the infallible nominal experiences of whatever appears, such as water and pus, have become valid through experience, and there is not a single truly established thing that can withstand analysis. Then, the validity of white conch shells and yellow conch shells will become indistinguishable. Likewise, conceptual and non-conceptual, confused and unconfused, everything is the same.
