Without realizing that the appearance of external phenomena such as blue arises from the ripening of the seed of one's own consciousness, which has been transmitted from beginningless time, beings accept external objects as 'mind-appearances.' For example, in a dream, external objects such as forms do not arise separately; rather, from the ripening of the power of consciousness itself, minds with the aspect of forms, sounds, etc., arise. Similarly, in the waking state, if one were to say that there are no external objects, but only internal mind, then, secondly, there are two points: the actual refutation and the demonstration that the remaining proofs for the arising of object-appearances from consciousness are also meaningless. First, if without external objects, consciousness alone arises in the form of object-appearances, then it would follow that a blind person would see forms in the waking state, which is a refutation. If one were to assert that the power is not ripened in the waking state, then it would follow that forms would not arise even in the dream state, which is also a refutation. Therefore, the three—object, sense faculty, and consciousness—are equally true and false. The first point is unreasonable because, if that were the case, just as in a dream, without the eye faculty, the mind-consciousness that appears as blue and other objects arises from the ripening of one's own habitual tendencies, similar to the eye-consciousness in the waking state, then even without the eye faculty, the seed of one's own consciousness would awaken and fully ripen. Why would this blind person not experience the appearance of forms and other objects in the waking state, just as a non-blind person would? Because both dream and waking states are the same in that they lack the eye faculty. Moreover, if consciousness arises as self-established without forms and other objects, then the key point is that there would be no difference between dream and waking states. The reason why a blind person in the waking state does not experience the clear appearance of forms and other objects as in a dream is not because they lack eyes, but because the power to generate such a mind-consciousness has not ripened, and it only ripens in sleep, not in the waking state. If one were to say that the eye is actually the power, and because it is lost, it does not appear, then it would follow that it would not appear even in the dream state, because there are no eyes. Secondly, if, as you say, the power of the sixth consciousness is ripened in the dream state but not in the waking state, and you are allowed to say that with mere words without reason, then we could also say that the power of the sixth consciousness is not present in the waking state for a blind person, and therefore it is not present in the dream state either. Why would that not be reasonable? Just as there are no eyes.

Just like a blind person when awake, the maturation of the habit of object appearance in his continuum is not the cause of this (blind person). Similarly, in a dream, sleep itself is not the cause of the maturation or seeing of the habit of object appearance, just as the habit of color appearance can mature even without eyes during sleep, and the same is true for a blind person without eyes during the day, both being the same in being without. Thus, if it is not necessary to always rely on the eyes, but object appearance can occur solely through ability, then it cannot be said that the absence of eyes in a blind person when awake is the cause of color appearance, just as in a dream at night, sleep causes the eye faculty to not function. This is the same as not having eyes, therefore, sleep is not the cause of color appearance. Form is consciousness appearing as form, and eyes also come from consciousness. If both eyes and form are false, and consciousness is truly existent, then form is not true in either dream or wakefulness. The eye faculty does not exist in either the blind person when awake or during sleep. Consciousness is constantly existent. Therefore, sleep causes the eye faculty to not function, but it does not harm object appearance and consciousness, this is the former's view. Third, because of what was just said, even in a dream, it is not merely consciousness without object and faculty, but like when awake, the dream is an object, things like form, and the eye faculty at that time, are holders of false objects, and there, it must be admitted that there is a cause, i.e., a cause or basis, for the arising of the discriminating consciousness. Second, in order to show that the proofs of the Mind-Only school have no other meaning, there are three: no logical proof, no scriptural proof, and no example proof. First, thus, in explaining that the three, object, faculty, and consciousness, are without self-nature, the answer of this Mind-Only school to the statement that objects are not true but consciousness is truly established is: the consciousness when awake is empty of meaning, just like the consciousness in a dream. And, the object when awake is false, because it is an object, just like the object in a dream. If this co-emergent (co-emergent wisdom) does not have other conditions, it should not exist, because there is no basis, just like a garment of turtle hair, etc. In these ways, whatever answers were given to the Madhyamika school, or whatever was said, in the view of the Madhyamika school, nothing was seen to be established other than mere promises, because what is to be proven is the same as what is not established. Therefore, only in Mind-Only to say
