Therefore, regarding the meaning of what is said, "One does not rely on the edges of the past, future, and present," and the connection of the Vibhajyavāda. Ga-Jie and Buddhagupta said that one should show the reason why it is impossible to have views based on the edge of the sutras that are in accordance with the Śrāvakayāna. Sāramati said that if it is said that the five aggregates exist because they are the place of views, then it should be shown that the views themselves do not exist. Chandrakirti said that if it is said that seeing dependent origination does not rely on the edges of the past and future, then what are the edges of the past and future? How does one not rely on them? It is explained for the purpose of showing this. There are two aspects to this: the text and the name. The first has two: identifying the views of the opposing side; showing the reasoning for refuting the views. The first is: I existed or did not exist in the past, and the world is permanent, etc., the four, that is, the sixteen views that rely on the past, etc., are refuted by understanding dependent origination. That is, I existed in the past, and permanent, these two have the same meaning. It is the difference between the particular and the general, or the way of grasping. The past and future edges are the states of the past and future based on the present body aggregate. The edge is the part before and after it. Whether the future time arises or does not arise from other than the present, etc. I existed or did not exist in the past, neither of these two, these four views, and the world, I, and the aggregates are both permanent, etc., that is, impermanent, both, and neither, whoever holds these views relies on the past edge. Also, in other future times, I will appear or not appear, and neither of these two, these four, and the world, I, the aggregates have edges, etc., and do not have, are both, and are neither, whoever holds these eight views relies on the future edge, so this is revealing the wrong views to be refuted. The second part has two: refuting wrong views by abiding in conventional dependent origination like illusion, and refuting wrong views by abiding in ultimate reality free from elaboration, or refuting separately, and refuting jointly. The first part has four: refuting the four arising, etc., that rely on the past edge, refuting the four arising, etc., that rely on the future edge, refuting the four permanent, etc., that rely on the past edge, refuting the four permanent that rely on the future edge.

Furthermore, it is unreasonable to say, "I existed in the past." The reason is that the "I" that appeared in past lives is not the same as the "I" of this present person. If it is thought that the past "I" has become the present "I," that is not correct, because the aggregates of appropriation are different before and after, and it is unreasonable for the two to be one. If it is said that although the aggregates of appropriation are different, the "I" is one, that is also unreasonable, because what is your "I" apart from the aggregates of appropriation? Because it cannot be determined, it does not exist. Therefore, when it is said, "There is no 'I' separate from the aggregates of appropriation," if they think that the aggregates of appropriation themselves are the "I," then according to your view, the "I" does not exist, because the aggregates of appropriation themselves are not the "I." Why? Because these aggregates of appropriation are arising and ceasing, which contradicts the definition of "I." Furthermore, if it is said that the aggregates of appropriation themselves are the "I," there is no fault, then how can that which is to be appropriated become the appropriator? Because the agent and the action are not the same. If it is thought that the "I" is different from the aggregates of appropriation, then it is unreasonable for the "I" to be different from the aggregates of appropriation. If it is different from the aggregates, then even without the aggregates of appropriation, that "I" should be able to be grasped, but that is impossible. Therefore, there is no "I" separate from the aggregates of appropriation. The "I" is neither the aggregates of appropriation themselves, nor does it exist without depending on the aggregates of appropriation, and in conventional terms, the "I" is not indeterminate either, because it is established dependently. Therefore, it is not like a rabbit's horn. Furthermore, it is also unreasonable to say, "I did not appear in the past." Because the "I" that was spoken of in past lives is not different in nature from this present "I." If this present "I" is different in nature from that past "I," then the two are unrelated, and without the past "I," this present "I" would arise, and there would be such a fault. Similarly, that past "I" would now exist together with this "I" like a pot and a cushion, and it would not die in the previous basis, and would be born here. If the "I" that is established by nature as arising and ceasing momentarily exists separately before and after
