The phrase "when name and form arise" and so on, comes from the Commentary on Clear Words. Thus, when name and form have arisen, the six sense bases, such as the eye, will arise as their cause. Dependent on the six sense bases, contact that combines with the six objects will truly arise. How does that arise? Dependent on the empowering condition of the eye faculty, the objective condition of form, the immediately preceding condition of the mind that remembers, and the all-pervasive mental factors such as feeling, that which is called contact is solely produced. What is contact? Thus, the immediately preceding condition of the four names, the eye faculty, and the object of form—the first two conditions are form—dependent on these three, the eye consciousness will arise. The essence is the combination of the eye, form, and consciousness; that which does not completely determine whether an object is pleasing or displeasing is the aggregate of the eye, which is contact. From that contact, for the purpose of completely determining the object, pleasant feelings and so on will universally arise for a pleasing object. The remainder of contact and feeling should be regarded as in the beginning. When a pleasant feeling arises, one craves without separating from it. When suffering arises, one craves in order to be separated from it. For neutral feeling, one craves in order to not let it diminish. Thus, craving arises from the condition of feeling, that is, because one craves for the meaning of experiencing the object. When craving arises, one grasps due to that condition. What does one grasp? The four types of grasping: desire grasping, view grasping, ethical discipline and moral conduct grasping, and self-assertion. That is, grasping will arise. If there is grasping, then by making karma powerful, the rebirth of the grasper will occur, and existence will arise greatly. Therefore, if one does not rely on feeling with discriminating wisdom, does not claim craving as one's own, and there is no grasping, then one will be liberated by that, and at that time there will be no existence. That existence is also the karma of the three doors, and it is that which possesses the five aggregates. From this, the five future aggregates will arise, therefore it is called existence. All three karmas of the three doors will also produce the five aggregates, therefore the result is named as the cause. Among them, the karma of body and speech is the nature of the form aggregate, and the karma of mind is the four aggregates. Here, existence is the existence of karma, and in order to accomplish rebirth, the result is named as the cause.

It is a term. From existence, nourished by craving and grasping, one is born in the future existence. From that, old age and death, as well as sorrow, lamentation, and so on, suffering, discomfort, and disturbances arise. Among these, old age is the ripening of the aggregates. Death is the destruction of the aggregates of old age. The mental anguish of being separated from what is desirable or the complete ignorance and attachment of dying, along with sorrow, and the verbal lamentation caused by that sorrow, and the physical or, the suffering that harms the five senses, and the discomfort that harms the mind, and the mental and physical disturbances arising from suffering and discomfort. These arise from birth, and thus the aggregates that experience many sufferings are without self and self-possession, or are solely emptiness, and this arises dependent on causes and conditions. Also, the aggregates of suffering mean that they are not mixed with happiness. The second is, the root of the latter ten branches, such as consciousness in the reverse cycle of samsara, is action. Therefore, the noble ones who are skilled in that suchness do not manifestly accumulate the karma that propels them. Therefore, the wise do not accumulate the root of samsara, which is action. This is the earlier translation. The root of samsara is action, therefore the unwise ordinary beings are the agents of action, but the wise do not accumulate it, because they see that suchness. How does one not accumulate it? One cannot directly prevent it, but must uproot it from the cause. Moreover, if ignorance ceases, then actions and so on will not arise. The third is the order of the cessation of the limbs: the means of the cessation of ignorance is the wisdom of truly realizing dependent origination, or by knowing, by meditating on that suchness. Because the cause, ignorance, and so on, cease, the result, the later branches, do not manifestly arise. Therefore, the sole aggregate of the suffering of samsara, since it does not arise again in this way, is truly extinguished. The second is called the examination of the twelve limbs of existence, which is the twenty-sixth chapter. In the twenty-seventh chapter, the examination of views, the connection of the sutra is: in the sutra, one who truly sees dependent origination
