Therefore, singing, dancing with moving hands and feet and swaying body, as well as playing, striking, and blowing cymbals and other musical instruments, those who abide by the precepts should not do them at inappropriate times. Second, garlands and the like are three. The Blessed One was dwelling in the Kalanda Garden of Light in the city of Rajagriha (near modern Patna, Bihar, India). At that time, when the monastery's festival was being held, the Six Groups of monks were adorned with colors and garlands. Furthermore, in order to make the body fragrant and beautiful, one should not smear it with incense such as agarwood. One should not apply fragrant scents such as sandalwood. One should not smear the body with beautiful colors such as turmeric, saffron, and cinnabar, nor should one draw patterns on the forehead. Ascetics should not wear or hang garlands of various kinds of flowers as head ornaments, or garlands around the neck. One should not adorn one's neck, hands, feet, etc. with items known as fine ornaments such as gold, silver, pearls, gems, and lapis lazuli. One should not apply eye medicine mixed with cinnabar, saffron, camphor, and smoke, etc., to the eyes unless the eyes are sick. In order to make the body color beautiful and to generate attachment, one should not look in mirrors and glass, etc., nor should one add fragrance to bathwater, etc. Third, abandoning large and high beds, and the need to abandon incidental singing, dancing, garlands, beds, etc., are twofold. First, beds made of wood, etc., that are more than one cubit high, and beds made of ivory and conch shells, etc., or decorated with them, even if they are low, should not be slept on or sat on in fine beds. When teaching the excellent Dharma, it is permissible to sit on a jeweled throne. When sitting on it, one should not have attachment, but should sit with the thought of impermanence, and both the seat and bedding are allowed to be made of leather, but can be used in remote areas and where there is a special need. Second, the need is to desire singing, dancing, music, and bedding, garlands, etc., and to become arrogant or conceited by relying on anything, to abandon the factors or things of arrogance, and if one does not rely on them, one is abiding in the asceticism of abandonment, and is called virtuous. Fourth, regarding afternoon food, speaking of inappropriate times, speaking of appropriate times, faults
