Commentary on the Novice Monk's Vinaya Verses of the Sarvastivada School - A Garland of Jewels Commentary on the Novice Monk's Vinaya Verses of the Sarvastivada School - A Garland of Jewels Commentary on the Novice Monk's Vinaya Verses of the Sarvastivada School - A Garland of Jewels. Homage! Om Svasti! Having paid homage to the skillful one who opens the path of individual liberation, the basis of qualities, I will compose a commentary, a garland of jewels, that leads to a definite understanding of the novice monk's precepts. Here, I will explain this fifty-verse text that clearly shows the distinctions of what to accept and reject in relation to time and objects, which are the precepts of a novice monk. There are four parts: the meaning of the title, the translator's homage, the meaning of the text, and the conclusion. First: In Sanskrit: Aryamulasarvastivadishramanerakarika. In Tibetan: The one who is far from afflictions, who speaks of the existence of all things in the five objects of knowledge or the three times, who is diligent in the activities of the guru and recitations, etc., and who strives in the novice monk's precepts. Second: Homage to the Buddha, who knows all things, including the subtle details of cause and effect, in accordance with the Vinaya. This was composed by the translator. Third: There are two parts: the limbs of engaging in composing the treatise, and the actual nature of the treatise to be composed. The first has two parts: praise and promise. First: By protecting from the suffering of bad migrations and samsara, the protector, and the all-knowing one who knows all knowable things as they are and as many as they are, that is, the Buddha who has perfected the two benefits, and the Dharma of scripture and realization, and the Sangha of noble ones, including those in training and those who are not, I pay homage to the many. This is the praise. Second: The rituals of a novice monk, the activities of abandoning and adopting, etc., having gathered them from the ocean-like Vinaya, I will definitely explain them briefly according to the meaning of the scriptures, this is the promise. Second, there are two parts: advice that one must protect the precepts after ordaining, and a detailed explanation of how to protect them. First: Shakya is the lineage, and the teachings of scripture and realization spoken by the lion who subdues non-Buddhists, afflictions, and opponents, having faith of desire and trust in the four truths and karma, etc., having shaved hair and beard only in truth, having worn saffron robes, having gone forth from home to homelessness,

It shows the four perfections of ordination: believing that only the true Dharma is perfect with faith, shaving hair and beard and wearing saffron robes is perfect in discipline, going from home to homelessness is perfect in place, and ordination itself shows perfection. The perfection of practice is: the nature of the four defeats, and the six prohibitions including drinking alcohol, etc., to restrain one's own behavior, to be respectful and constant with body, speech and mind firmly throughout one's life, to be mindful and wise, to be extremely careful to guard against even the slightest faults. This is like protecting a tree from being damaged by surrounding it with a fence and wooden fence from the outside. In order not to commit defeat, if the minor precepts like fences and wooden fences are not damaged, the discipline can be firmly guarded. Just as one protects one's own body, one must abandon what is contrary and accomplish what is harmonious, thereby guarding the precepts. The second part includes: what should be done in the morning, what should be done after the meal, the precepts that are often taught, what should be done after the afternoon, and the conclusion by telling the fruits of these things. The first part: dividing one night into five parts, getting up from bed in the early morning of the second half of the night, and reciting sutras and so on until dawn, and dedicating the merits to sentient beings. With inanimate clean water and wooden branches, wash the dirt on the face and the dirt on the teeth. To the Buddha who has completed the ultimate perfection of abandonment and realization, awakened from the sleep of ignorance, and increased wisdom in knowledge, pay homage with body, speech and mind, and perform other Buddhist activities. Go to the residence of the Khenpo or the scholar of the monastery, that is, the door of the room where the master lives or resides, gently knock on the door with your hand, and then open the door. After entering, respectfully pay homage to the master, and ask whether the elements such as earth are in harmony and comfortable, or not in harmony and uncomfortable, whether you slept peacefully at night, whether you dreamed, and whether you have caused obstacles to the master's thoughts, and so on. Then pay homage to the stupa and circumambulate it, and ask if it is possible to do other things that should be done in the morning except for urination and defecation. If the master says it is possible to do so, prepare the offering altar or mandala, and offerings such as flowers and incense.
