In order to act properly, one should strive diligently. Water should be examined in a clear vessel, such as a water strainer, fish skin, or conch bowl. When examining, first examine the top of the water, then the middle, and finally the bottom, in that order. If there are no fish skins or other such tools, one can also examine the water by cupping it in one's hands, or by filling a bottle with leaves from trees, etc. This is because the large and small creatures in the water, visible to the naked eye and able to be caught in a filter, will not be recognized if observed for a long time due to eye fatigue; if observed for too short a time, they will not be recognized due to being cursory. Therefore, one should repeatedly and carefully examine with clear eyes for an appropriate amount of time, and only believe after being certain that there are no creatures. Compassionate people, regarding the juice of foods such as the liquid on top of yogurt, even if there were none before, bees and other creatures may suddenly appear, so one should carefully examine whether there are creatures, and only use it if there are none. If creatures are found, one should carefully filter them with one of the five water strainers, etc., ensuring that they do not die. At this time, one should not harm these creatures, and must ensure that they are not harmed. If one harms or kills a certain number of creatures, one will commit a sin corresponding to that number. Therefore, one should not leave water containers, etc., uncovered, one should not take creatures living in water onto land, and one should not put creatures living on land into water, etc., one must avoid harming sentient beings. Regarding the examination of water, if one examines it in the morning, like today, then it can be used until the next morning. There are five types of water that can be used even if one has not examined them oneself: water that has been examined within a fathom (an ancient unit of length, approximately eight feet) around, well water, etc., water of virtuous monks, water of the Sangha, and water that can be trusted. These waters are, in order: first, going to the center of ponds, lakes, etc., submerging up to the knees, examining whether there are creatures, and if there are none, then the water examined within a fathom around can be used; second, examining in containers such as wells, and being certain that there are no creatures; third, water that has been examined and taken by virtuous monks; fourth, water that has been filtered and stored by the Sangha together; fifth, such as water that springs from cliffs, rocks, or underground. For things on land, such as sewage for washing roots, houses, etc., and firewood and earth, etc., in short, any object that one needs,

When cleaning, one should ensure there are no living beings present. Because one possesses the discipline to avoid the faults of one's own body, speech, and mind, one must protect against killing living beings. Therefore, one should strive to maintain the lamp room and other such places. In the morning, at the place where the Khenpo and others wash their faces, a mat should be laid out, and water for washing, soil, and toothbrushes should be prepared, that is, toothbrushes for washing the face. At the place for urinating and defecating, soil and leaves should be prepared. Mix the dung of young Indian cows with soil to make balls, and use them for washing, or prepare clay made from borax and cardamom. One should also wash the Lama's begging bowl, wash clothes, and clean the dwelling, and in short, accomplish all the tasks that the Lama needs to have done. After completing the Lama's tasks, one should know or understand the time for morning food and drink, and then prostrate to the Khenpo or Lama. As before, with reverence in body, speech, and mind, one should join one's palms and say to the Lama, "Please take your meal," or "Please eat," or "Please partake." One who possesses discipline or is an ascetic should make such a request. After making such a request, prepare abundant food, and wash one's mouth, hands, and begging bowl cleanly. One should not look to the left or right, and the morsels of food should not be too large or too small, but one should act properly. Then, cut off a portion of food and eat without speaking, in moderation or with awareness. If one eats in order to become strong and beautiful, that is not virtuous. If one does not eat, one will become weak and unable to do good, so if one eats in order to be able to engage in virtue, that is virtuous. If neither of these is the case, then it is neutral, so one should have a virtuous intention. In order to avert hunger or the disease of hunger, and the deterioration of the body, and the inability to engage in virtue, one should eat both kinds of food with the thought, "I am eating." Similarly, one should drink beverages. Water that can be examined and investigated is for eating and drinking. Afterward, wash one's hands and mouth with clean water, and also wash the begging bowl. In order to avert the donor's bad aspirations, and in order to truly increase the vast merit of generosity, one should recite one verse of generosity, and also one for the Naga king Gawa and Nye Gawa, for a total of two. The second is:
