Three and three will arise. Furthermore, the virtuous actions to be cultivated are the ten paths of virtuous actions, from abandoning killing to abandoning wrong views. These, when summarized, are included in the three virtues of body, speech, and mind. Among them, the virtuous actions of the body include prostrations and circumambulations, going back and forth for the sake of the Dharma and for the sake of sentient beings, and so on. The virtuous actions of speech include recitation and repetition, speaking words of Dharma and for the sake of sentient beings, and so on. The virtuous actions of the mind include faith, respect, renunciation, love, compassion, the mind of enlightenment, and so on. In short, all actions of body and speech that are motivated by a virtuous mind, and especially if all three—beginning, main part, and conclusion—are entirely possessed by a virtuous mind, then only happiness will be produced as a result. If thoughts and actions are mixed with virtue and non-virtue, then happiness and suffering will be produced alternately, so one should be possessed only by a virtuous mind. These also, due to the distinction of strong and weak motivation, become three kinds of virtue—great, medium, and small—and as a result, one is born among the gods of the higher realms, the gods of the desire realm, and humans. In particular, the virtue that is in harmony with liberation is what obtains the three enlightenments. As for the result that is in accordance with the cause, as the acting cause, one is happy to do good wherever one is born; as the experiencing cause, one experiences ten things such as long life; and as the dominating result, one experiences things such as the land being bright. Therefore, since there are such benefits in abandoning non-virtue and cultivating virtue, one should not be attached to the prosperity of this short life, but should accomplish something that fulfills the eternal aspiration. For this, one should practice taking and abandoning cause and effect without error. One should diligently cultivate the understanding that this suffering-filled cycle of existence is like a criminal escaping from a dark prison. Fourth, meditating on the four immeasurables: Because the object, sentient beings, is immeasurable, and the aspects of the mind, such as compassion, are immeasurable, it is called immeasurable. That is to say, among these sentient beings who are equal to the extent of space, there is not one who has not been my mother. Like this, there is no one who has not been a mother, and just as the present mother has protected us from all harm, we have been cared for with loving hearts, and raised harmoniously with loving conduct. They are all kind mothers who have bestowed benefits in many ways, and one should not distinguish between enemies and friends.

Why should one stop them? These beings are immersed in the deluded waters of madness, yet they still recognize the relationship between mother and child. Therefore, although these sentient beings of the six realms desire happiness, they only create suffering. Their desires and actions are contradictory, and they continuously experience unbearable suffering and its causes. How pitiful! Thinking, "May the suffering of these beings ripen upon me," and combining it with the in and out breaths, one should learn to exchange happiness and suffering. If one cannot do that, one can also take one's own suffering, or even if there is no suffering, one can take one's own easily arising afflictions as the object of one's mind. Substituting this for the suffering of all sentient beings and its cause, the origin, one should think, "May all sentient beings be free from suffering and the cause of suffering through my suffering and its cause." Thus, one should unite the actions of body, speech, and mind, satisfying the mind, and then rest in the natural, unconditioned state. As an example, loving-kindness is: clearly manifesting a temporary feeling of happiness in one's own mind, or clearly manifesting a virtuous quality of one's own mind in one's thoughts, and then dedicating this as the happiness and cause of happiness for all sentient beings. Thinking and reciting, "May all sentient beings possess happiness and the cause of happiness through my virtue and its cause," and then resting in the unfabricated state of mind. Joy is: wishing that this happiness is not just temporary happiness, but that it is inseparable from great happiness, which has the characteristic of eternal happiness. Thinking and reciting in this way, and then releasing its essence and abiding. Equanimity is: thinking that all sentient beings should have happiness and should be free from suffering. Therefore, thinking, "May all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free from attachment and aversion." Then, releasing the one who is thinking into his own place, abiding in ultimate equanimity. Thus, these four immeasurables are also cultivated alternately with the two aspects of mind, conventional and ultimate. After becoming accustomed to this, the appearance of the mind of reality will appear in the form of the four conventional immeasurables. Thus, after generating realization on the four immeasurables, one should strive diligently until genuine refuge and bodhicitta have arisen. Fifth, taking refuge is: for example, a criminal who has fallen into a prison pit, tormented by various punishments.
