If the experience arises, it can be accomplished. Therefore, it is necessary to liberate the aggregates into the rainbow body of clear light. The third is the gentle search, which involves erecting an object of focus, such as a small wooden stick, in front of you. By uttering the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) melodiously and at length, a continuous chain of Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) syllables arises from the Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) in the heart. Gradually wrap the chain around the object of focus from its base to its tip, then release it for a moment and rest. Then, gradually unwind it, gather it inward, and completely dissolve it into the Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) in the heart, and then rest. In this way, by uniting the three—wind, mind, and Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽)—and practicing going and returning outwardly and inwardly, the intensity of conceptual thoughts subsides, and mental pliancy is attained, enabling one to transform the object of focus at will. This is the meaning of the gentle search. The fourth is entering the path, which involves visualizing one's body and wind-mind as unified in the form of a blue Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) syllable. Enter a path in front of you that resembles the crawling of a worm, proceed along it, and rest slightly at the bends. Imagine reaching the distant and limitless other shore, utter a long Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ།,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), and then rest naturally. Then, return as before and rest in your natural state. Initially, this will give rise to experiences of varying intensity, such as joy and sorrow, but eventually, the body and mind will be pervaded by uncontaminated bliss. This will place the three doors of body, speech, and mind on the correct path, spontaneously cutting off conceptual thoughts and giving rise to the experience of bliss-clarity-non-thought, thereby maintaining its true nature. The purpose of these practices is threefold: commonly, they purify the sins of speech and pacify obstacles; specifically, they reverse the attachment to speech, preventing one from falling into samsara; and ultimately, they become inseparable from the Sambhogakaya, the speech vajra. The third preliminary practice for the mind has three aspects. As it says in the Prasangika: "Mind first arises, then abides, and finally ceases. By examining these three, the mind is tamed, and the nature of mind is known." Therefore, first examine the place of arising of the mind. What is this "mind" that experiences all happiness and suffering, this knowing and moving thing, arising from? Does it arise from external objects, such as the environment and its contents? If it arises from any of the four external elements, can it be found by breaking them down into atoms? Does it arise from the internal body? If so, can it be found by searching through its various parts? If it arises from emptiness,

If it is thought to arise from the earth, does the place of arising become established? If it is thought to arise from appearance, can its object be found? In short, examine outwardly the mind that is to be sought, and look inwardly at the mind of the seeker. Until the self-face, which is separated from all characteristics of identification, is seen, investigate thoroughly and let go. Second, examining the place of dwelling: As before, where does it dwell, whether in the outer and inner, the container and contents, the parts of the body, etc.? Examine and analyze by what it is represented, whether by shape, color, function, or essence. If these are not established anywhere, then look back at the knowing consciousness. Although consciousness is clear and apparent, its self-nature is not established, so repeat the examination until it is definitively established as without foundation or root. Third, examining the place of going: When the mind suddenly arises and vanishes, where does it go? Upon examination, there is no place where it goes, whether outer or inner, container or contents, appearance or emptiness, existence or non-existence, etc. The very nature of the mind that possesses an object is also separated from all characteristics of identification such as "this is it," so the place of going and the mind that goes are not established. Repeat the examination until it is definitively established as awareness-emptiness, free from going and coming. The purpose of these is threefold: Commonly, it purifies the sins of the mind and pacifies obstacles; especially, it prevents falling into samsara by reversing the mind's clinging; ultimately, the heart becomes the vajra dharmakaya, non-dual. As it is said in the 'Klong gsal': The preliminaries of body, speech, and mind, have three purposes: common, special, and ultimate, which should be understood. And again, the first two purposes just mentioned are common, and the latter is supreme, so they are also explained as two. As it is said in the 'Thal 'gyur': There are two purposes for this, distinguish between common and supreme. Third, settling into the natural state has two aspects: actually settling and restoring to the original state. First, showing the necessity of settling into the natural state, and the manner of how to settle. First: As it is said in the 'Klong gsal': The arising and disturbance of body, speech, and mind, settle into the natural state in order to liberate them. That is, whatever arises, whether it is a conceptual thought to be abandoned, a dharma of samsara, or a conceptual thought of virtue, a dharma of antidote, focus the awareness one-pointedly on whatever aspect is clear and meditate. Thus, conceptual thought will transform and become non-conceptual. For example, just as muddy water becomes clear when left undisturbed.
