That which cannot be exhausted by anything else is like the branches, leaves, and fruits of a fallen tree. Life is quickly exhausted, like a pond with a hole in the bottom that leaks water. Even for an instant, one is close to death, like a domestic animal being led to the slaughter. The abandoned corpse is like a stone used to wipe away filth. The consciousness wanders in the bardo, like a traveler who doesn't know the way. Seeking a place for the next life is like a bee seeking a honeycomb. Having nowhere to go, being helpless, is like a small child abandoned naked. The causes of death are many, like the branches of a poisonous tree. The harms to life are many, like a butter lamp in the midst of rain and wind. Suddenly dying untimely is like a butterfly encountering a flame. Therefore, thinking about death, at that time there is nothing more beneficial than the sacred Dharma, so in this life I must grasp the essentials of the path. If I don't do it now, there is no certainty in life, so what should I do if I suddenly die? Thinking in this way, I should engage in practice. Third, thinking about the faults of samsara: In the past, I have taken countless births in this place of the three realms of samsara, experiencing immeasurable suffering, and still there is no certainty that I will end rebirth with just this much. I must endlessly experience suffering in samsara. All sentient beings, including my parents, are also experiencing only the suffering of the six realms. Among them, in the two hot and cold hells, there are the Reviving Hell, etc.; the Black Line Hell, etc.; the Crushing Hell, etc.; the Crying Hell, etc.; the Great Crying Hell, etc.; the Hot Hell, etc.; the Very Hot Hell, etc.; and the Uninterrupted Hell, these eight hells, where a rain of various weapons falls, being cut into pieces, dying and reviving; drawing black lines on the body, being cut with axes, saws, and swords; being struck with swords, spears, and other weapons; being beaten and crushed by monsters with heads like goats and sheep; when climbing up and down the Shalmali tree, all its branches, leaves, and bark become sharp blades, piercing flesh and skin, causing death; being cut and eaten by tigers, leopards, vultures, carrion birds, wild dogs, and venomous snakes; being locked in a doorless iron cage burning with fierce fire and burned; in a huge iron pot

Furthermore, being cooked headfirst in boiling water, the flesh and skin peeling off and decaying, yet not dying, experiencing suffering; walking on burning iron ground; endless rivers of ash; putrid swamps; forests of sword-leaf trees, even if flesh and bone dissolve, one does not die; even if one dies in an instant, one is immediately revived and experiences the same suffering again until the end of the kalpa. Moreover, there are eight cold hells: called Achu; called Jeyhud; called Sothamthampa; having blisters; having burst blisters; like উৎপལ་(藏文:ཨུཏྤལ་,梵文天城体:utpala,梵文罗马拟音:utpala,汉语字面意思:blue lotus); like a lotus; splitting open like a great lotus, because it is extremely cold, they utter trembling, evil sounds; their mouths freeze shut, unable to speak; blisters appear from the touch of cold; even colder than that, the blisters burst; extremely cold, the body splits into four or five pieces, even hundreds or thousands of pieces; even then one does not die, and one must endure suffering for a long time. In the realm of the pretas, the suffering is especially great: those with external obscurations cannot see or hear any external food or drink, let alone taste it. Some can see food and drink, but are guarded by the servants of Yama and cannot enjoy it; for others, food and drink turn into burning flames; those with internal obscurations, whatever food or drink enters their mouths, turns into fire as soon as it reaches their stomachs, and flames and smoke pour out of their mouths and noses, and finally their bellies burst open and flames blaze out. Those with common obscurations cannot bear the cold even when the sun rises in winter; even when the moon rises in summer, they are scorched, their bodies are naked and without clothes, their faces are bluish-black, and they are emaciated from not having food or drink; their empty intestines stick to their backs; their hair stands on end and their eyes sink in; even if they find food, their mouths are only as big as the eye of a needle, and their throats are only as thin as a horse's tail, so they cannot swallow it; their bellies are as big as a country, so they cannot be filled, and there is no time to escape hunger and thirst; some have swollen mouths, so no food or drink can pass through, and they must endure the suffering of not dying for five thousand or even tens of thousands of years in the realm of the pretas. If one is reborn as an animal, the suffering is especially great:
