If someone thinks: Where is the next life? There is no need to do good deeds oneself. If one dies, the mind disappears like smoke and becomes nothing, that would be fine. But it is not like that. The Sutra says: The karma of sentient beings will not be destroyed even after hundreds of kalpas. When the time of gathering comes, each will ripen into its own fruit. Just as seeds ripen into their respective fruits, the cause of various kinds of happiness and suffering is none other than the two, good and non-good. For all those who want liberation, it is very important to take and abandon all the key points without error. The great teacher said: What can the happiness of this life do with the sins that have become the cause of suffering for many lifetimes? The short years of this life are only a few years, but the next life cannot be measured. In order to prevent others from suffering, one should take and abandon good and evil with the means of happiness. Thus, there is no power to abandon the evil deeds that have been done, and there is no power to obtain the good deeds that one has not done oneself. Moreover, not only the wealth and treasures accumulated in this life, dear relatives and friends, the houses built, and all the power and enjoyment must be separated, but also the flesh and blood that one is born with must be left behind, and one must go alone to a strange land. At that time, only karma follows, following like body and shadow. The Sutra of Advice to the King says: When death approaches the king, enjoyment and relatives will not follow. Wherever beings are, wherever they go, karma follows like a shadow. Shantideva said: When one is seized by the messengers of Yama, what is the use of relatives? What is the use of friends? Thus, there are many kinds of good and non-good karma, but the Abhidharmakosha says: From these, in brief, good and non-good, each in its own way, are explained as the ten paths of karma. Thus, it includes the three karmas of body, the four karmas of speech, and the three karmas of mind. In this way, all the good deeds done through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, from the subtle to the extremely subtle, should not be missed, but should be practiced in the continuum like life-saving medicine. Accumulating small good deeds will at some point become great good deeds. The Samgraha Sutra says: Drop by drop of water fills the vase from the beginning to the end. Similarly, gradually, little by little, it will be completely filled.

The mind of enlightenment is also the cause of Buddhahood, gradually perfecting pure qualities and becoming a Buddha. Similarly, all major, medium, and minor non-virtuous actions should be abandoned with mindfulness, like food mixed with poison. Even small sins can generate great suffering due to their transformative power. For example, even a mountain of grass can be destroyed if it encounters a tiny spark. Shantideva said, "The merit accumulated over a thousand eons, such as offerings and worship to the Sugatas, all those virtuous deeds, a single moment of anger can destroy." The Sutra says, "Even doing small sins will cause great fear and collapse in the next world, like poison entering the body." The great teacher said, "Even small actions have great results, what need is there to mention accumulating great good or evil?" The holy one said, "If antidotes are not applied when afflictions arise, Dringriwa, the purpose of Dharma practice is lost." Therefore, regarding karma and its results, one must not confuse what to adopt and what to abandon. Even virtuous actions with outflows only produce temporary happiness, and ultimately the results will be exhausted. Therefore, all virtuous actions should be accompanied by the intention of bodhichitta, and non-virtuous actions should be immediately confessed and restrained with strong remorse. Ultimately, both should be accompanied by the great wisdom that does not conceptualize the three spheres, which is very important. As the Four Hundred Verses say, "For those with the mind of enlightenment, whether actions are virtuous or non-virtuous, all become virtuous, because the mind is in control." The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says, "From today until sleep, even if one is negligent, the power of merit will constantly and continuously increase greatly, like the vastness of space." As the Compendium Sutra says, "If there is no sign, then it is the dedication to enlightenment." Thus, one should not be weary of only practicing pure virtuous actions, just like a farmer plowing. One should not shrink from practicing great virtuous actions, just like a warrior entering the battlefield. One should practice the holy Dharma day and night without interruption, like turning a wheel of fire, without being idle for even a moment. Fourth, the faults of samsara.
