Therefore, one's own mind-nature is supreme. Thus it is. Thirdly, "Having taken refuge, turn away from the inferior path, generate the mind of enlightenment." This means that after taking refuge, in order to turn away from the inferior path and the pursuit of peace, one generates the supreme mind of enlightenment. All sentient beings are inherently pure by nature, but because they do not recognize their own nature, they wander in samsara. These beings have been mothers, fathers, spouses, etc. to each other countless times since beginningless time, and have benefited each other immeasurably. Therefore, one has a deep and unwavering conviction that they are all kind and precious, and one generates genuine love. All of them are oppressed by the heavy burden of suffering. They do not know the means to happiness. Although they desire happiness, they strive to create suffering, so their desires and actions are contrary and they appear like madmen. Aroused by immeasurable compassion, one resolves to liberate all beings as vast as space from the suffering of existence, which is like an ocean that is difficult to cross and full of turbulent waves, where one is born and dies involuntarily, not knowing where one is going, and is carried away by the violent winds of karma. The mere wish to attain the unsurpassed state of perfect enlightenment is the aspiration bodhicitta. The desire to immediately engage in the practice of the special methods of the generation and completion stages in order to attain perfect enlightenment is the action bodhicitta. Thus, with such a thought, one aspires with aspiration and engages with action, and in this way, one generates the pure and stainless mind of enlightenment here and now. One thinks in this way and recites the words "difficult to cross the ocean of existence," etc., focusing on external sentient beings, which is the relative bodhicitta. And all of that, such as arising, ceasing, abiding, and focusing, is free from all elaboration, and one rests in the state of non-conceptual, great emptiness and luminosity, focusing on one's own inner mind, which is the ultimate bodhicitta. The Nirvana Sutra says, "By the distinction of relative and ultimate, the mind of enlightenment has two aspects." Thus it is. The common preliminaries to these are said to be cultivating the mind of renunciation and taking refuge, which are common to shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, etc. The generation of bodhicitta is common to the Paramita Vehicle. Secondly, there are three uncommon practices: purifying obstacles and negative karma, accumulating favorable conditions and merit, and cultivating the guru yoga, the root of blessings.

Om ma oṃ. (Tibetan seed syllable) First, in order to purify obscurations, visualize the deity, practice the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva. Because the greatest obstacle to the arising of genuine experience in the continuum is obscurations. Therefore, in order to purify obscurations, one should practice the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva. On the lotus and moon seat above one's head, etc., visualize on the lotus and moon seat above one's head, which appears as ordinary, the Lama Vajrasattva in union with his consort, arising from Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ). At his heart, on a moon seat, is a white vajra, marked in the center with the syllable Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूँ, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ), surrounded by the garland of the hundred-syllable mantra rotating to the right. By reciting the hundred-syllable mantra, a stream of white bodhicitta nectar descends from the mantra garland, entering through the Brahma aperture. All obscurations, misdeeds, and downfalls transform into the form of smoke, exiting from all the sense doors, and especially from the lower gate. The entire inside of the body is filled with wisdom nectar, and one should contemplate one's body as pure like a spotless crystal ball. Finally, Vajrasattva dissolves into light and merges into one's own head, and one develops a firm conviction that oneself and Vajrasattva are inseparable. Remaining in a state of non-conceptualization of the three spheres is the supreme method of purifying obscurations. As it is said: Sit upright and look straight. Among all repentances and purifications, it is the most supreme. Here, if we count the four powers, there are two powers of reliance: the object of confession is the Lama Vajrasattva. The reliance of one's own continuum is taking refuge and not abandoning bodhicitta, and with this, one prays that the obscurations of oneself and others may be purified, and fully contemplates the meaning of the mantra. The power of application is engaging in virtue as an antidote to non-virtue; here, it is the key points of deity visualization, mantra recitation, and washing away obscurations, etc. The power of regret is generating remorse for past deeds. The power of restoration or protection is the determination to refrain from committing sins in the future. Therefore, these two powers are contained in reciting the confession in verse or prose, such as "I, through ignorance..." at the end of the recitation. If one does not recite, and if there is no shame or regret, then the mind of confession will not arise. Once a genuine sense of regret arises, naturally the mind of protection will arise due to understanding the harm of misdeeds; this is the nature of Dharma. Thus, in the Sutra of the Four Dharmas, it says: Maitreya, a Bodhisattva possesses four dharmas.
