Although Dharma protectors are included within the Sangha Jewel, the reason for emphasizing them here is that on the path of Secret Mantra, the source of all blessings and accomplishments is the Lama Yidam, and the helpers in accomplishing activities such as removing obstacles are the wisdom Dakini Dharma protectors. Therefore, in Secret Mantra, the main deity of the mandala is the Buddha, the mantras that are expressed are the Dharma, and the Dakinis of the four castes are regarded as the Sangha. In this way, the Three Jewels are summarized into one great mandala. Also, there are cases where they are summarized into one root Lama, because his form is in accordance with the appearance of those to be tamed, and he guides the path, so he is also the Sangha Jewel or the Nirmanakaya among the three bodies. Speech is all the sounds that show what should be taken and abandoned, which is the Dharma Jewel or the Sambhogakaya. Mind is the wisdom of bliss and emptiness united, which is the Buddha Jewel or the Dharmakaya. Ultimately, it is the key point that the essence of the three bodies or the three refuges is of one taste. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: 'The Buddha has the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha also reaches that.' That is what is meant. So, how to meditate? As shown by 'In the sky in front, a wish-fulfilling tree,' etc., the place of reliance can endlessly produce what is needed and desired. As a symbol, in the sky in front, a wish-fulfilling tree is extremely lush, and its heart is the root Lama, in the form of red Vajradhara, surrounded by the lineage Lamas. From the branches that divide in four directions, in front is the special Buddha, on the right is the common Buddha, in the back is the image of the Dharma scriptures, on the left is the common Sangha, and around the edges are the special Sangha Jewels, visualized as dense as clouds. Who goes to that place? That is, 'I and all beings,' meaning that in order to place all these sentient beings who have been mothers in the state of accomplishment in one lifetime, now I, with the superior intention of desiring to accomplish the state of great compassion, as the helmsman of guidance, lead all the sentient beings gathered together without enemies or friends. Until what time do we go? Until Bodhi is not attained here.

The statement that one goes for refuge until that time refers to all three objects of refuge, the Three Jewels. This is because the other two objects of refuge besides the Buddha are not ultimate objects of refuge. As it is said in the scripture: The two aspects of Dharma and the assembly of noble ones are not ultimate objects of refuge. The Buddha Jewel is protected by being under refuge until one attains enlightenment. Once enlightenment is attained, one's desire for the object itself becomes even greater, becoming one, and never abandoning each other. Because it is the ultimate object of refuge, there is no need to hold on to the period before enlightenment is attained. How does one protect? The Buddha is the one who shows the places of what to take and what to abandon, so one asks him to be the teacher. What he teaches is the sacred Dharma, and by practicing it, one can be liberated from fear, so the Dharma is the actual refuge. How does one practice? Just as one seeks a guide on an unfamiliar path and follows him without error, one must learn from the conduct of the Sangha, so one asks the Sangha to be companions on the path. In this way, all of this is done by the Lama, and is also the union of all the Jewels. How to take refuge: By saying "I go for refuge," one expresses hope and reliance. With a firm determination in one's mind, one recites the words of refuge, such as "Namo, all beings including myself," until one's mind is satisfied. The measure of having gone for refuge is: knowing the qualities of the Three Jewels, knowing whether one's own and others' Three Jewels are objects of refuge, knowing the differences between the Three Jewels, vowing to take refuge by remembering the qualities, and not seeking other objects of refuge, that is, possessing the four characteristics. These are the refuge of the cause, because it is to indicate the Three Jewels that have already arisen in other continuums as objects of refuge. Finally, gathering together the object of refuge and those who take refuge, and placing them equally in the state of non-conceptual wisdom of the emptiness of the two graspers, is to make the refuge of the result, where one's own mind abides in the nature of the Three Jewels. As it is said in the Accomplishment of Wisdom: The mind free from defilements and attainment is the Buddha, the unchanging and stainless is the Dharma, and the spontaneously perfect qualities are the Sangha.
