If you cannot rise from meditation and seem to want to move but cannot, then if you suddenly enter the state, you will reach a state of single-pointedness. To that extent, it is a sign of familiarity with calm abiding. This is what the supreme master, the chief of the Dakinis, said. Second, cultivating insight, which has two parts. First, establishing the external apprehended object as being like empty space, without an object. The root text says: Appearances, sounds, all phenomena are like dreams and illusions; although various things appear, their nature is emptiness; like the sky, without self, free from elaboration, abide in that way. Therefore, regarding appearances, analyze them in this way: these phenomena of samsara and nirvana are created by your own mind. Apart from appearing in the mind, there is not even a particle of truly existing things elsewhere. What are all these? Everything appears, but it is not real. This is like the mechanism of a magic trick or the appearance of a dream, appearing clearly even though it does not exist. Just look at it vaguely. Moreover, this is merely conceptual thought, beyond the realm of elaboration of existence and non-existence of inherent nature, so in reality, even clinging to illusion cannot be determined. Therefore, whatever appearance of an external object arises, stare directly at its own nature, so that the appearance of the external object does not cease, but internally, there is no defilement of clinging thoughts, clear emptiness, without clinging, like the sky, appearing nakedly, abide in that state naturally. Second, establishing the internal apprehended mind. The root text says: Then examine the mind like gold with impurities; first, from where does it come, where does it reside now, where does it ultimately go, what is its shape and color? Examining it carefully in this way, this mind-essence is unborn, does not abide, does not cease, has no color, no shape, its essence is intangible, indescribable, like the sky, when awareness arises, in that state, relax without artifice. As it is said, we wander in samsara, suffering, all because we have not realized the true nature. Therefore, now is the time to distinguish between the past and the future, resolve to realize the true state of mind, and then relax the body and mind. Then, the mind does not follow after the past, nor does it meet the future, and does not make any modifications to the present awareness, but remains naturally and freshly, so that a clear and non-clinging awareness arises. When this awareness arises, it is sufficient to abide in the natural state. A person with such awareness, the mind

There is no need to search for anything; this is called placing awareness in the general principle. This is the meditation method for people of superior faculties. For most people, and especially those with dull faculties, it is difficult to understand this, so one should examine the three sources of existence (past, present, and future) to search for the mind. That is, turn the mind inward, let all sorts of thoughts arise in one's mind, and then contemplate: Where does this thought originally come from? Where does it reside now? Where does it ultimately go? What is its shape? What is its color? Without a moment's distraction, pursue awareness like chasing an arrow. If one says one has not seen the mind, then observe the confusion that arises suddenly. What is it like? Who is the observer? Are the observer and the observed the same or different? If, after questioning, one says it is insubstantial, then is it like ashes carried away by the wind, nothing at all? Or is it vague and indistinct? If one says it is substantial, then what is its shape: square, crescent, round, triangular, spherical, long, flat, etc.? Similarly, observe its color: white, yellow, red, green, blue, black, variegated, etc. If one thinks the mind arises within oneself, then examine whether it is located in the head, tail, inside, outside, or middle of the body. If one thinks it arises from the heart, then examine whether it is located in the outer membrane of the heart, the inner muscle, fat, blood, or the head and tail. In this way, observe the three places of arising, ceasing, and abiding, as well as the goer and the going, etc. After observing, if one sees nothing of the observer and the observed, the seer and the seen, and finds nothing after searching and analyzing, then in that state, without identifying or analyzing anything, like the sky, clear, bright, and vague, yet silent, with action ceased, methods exhausted, and free from all agents and actions, if one says there is a naked, clear awareness, then like stopping and resting, or like an old man basking in the sun, let the body relax and rest in that state. Having rested in this way, without any thoughts, feeling comfortable, all appearances naturally dissolve into a state of non-grasping and vastness. Rest in a vague and bewildered state. Third, the practice of uniting calm and insight: The root is, Appearances
