So! After completely purifying the intermediate state, considering those of middling faculties, in order to liberate them from the bonds of clinging to antidotes, the eight similes of illusion and emptiness like the sky are taught. Finally, for those who have reached the ultimate and those of sharp faculties, the nature of knowable objects is taught as it is. Among these, the final teachings, the definitive sutras that reveal the great secret of all Buddhas as it is, are: The Sutra Requested by the Noble King of Dharani Empowerment, the Sutra Requested by the Glorious Garland Lion's Roar Sound, the Sutra Requested by the Jewel Daughter, the Sutra Requested by the Immaculate Goddess, the Sutra of the Short-Armed Finger Garland, the Sutra of the Great Noble Nirvana, the Sutra Requested by Maitreya, and the Sutra of the Tathagatagarbha, and so on. From these, the Tathagatagarbha, the naturally pure element of reality that has always been present in all sentient beings, is taught, which is eternally present and unchanging. From its appearance aspect, the source of the signs and marks of the form body arises; from its emptiness aspect, the Dharmakaya is free from all extremes of elaboration, naturally and spontaneously present. Because qualities are spontaneously accomplished, it is like a jewel; because it does not change, it is like the sky; because it moistens and pervades all sentient beings, it is taught with the example of pure water. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: 'Like a jewel, the sky, and pure water, it is always naturally free from afflictions.' This very thing is present in all sentient beings, as it is said in the Uttaratantra: 'Because the complete Buddha body is emanated, and because suchness is undifferentiated, and because there is lineage, all sentient beings always have the essence of the Buddha.' Also, in the Two Examinations Sutra it says: 'Sentient beings are Buddhas, but they are obscured by adventitious stains. Removing them, they are Buddhas.' This does not mean that qualities that were not present when one was previously a sentient being are newly created later, because it is unchanging. The Sutra of the Great Revelation of the Essence says: 'The realm of time without beginning is the basis of all phenomena. Because this exists, all beings and Nirvana are attained. As it was before, so it is afterward, the unchanging suchness.' This also

The teaching on how the Tathāgatagarbha dwells within the husk of afflictions. The Ratnagotravibhāga states: "Buddha is like the lotus's stamen, honey is like honey in the bee, there is grain in the husk, gold in impurity, treasure in the earth, sprouts etc. contain fruit, there is a Buddha image in rotten clothes, there is a lord in the belly of a wicked woman, just as there is the form of a jewel in the earth, so too, this realm dwells in the hearts of sentient beings obscured by the stains of adventitious afflictions." Furthermore, in the category of teachings from the Ārya Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the Blessed One said to Kāśyapa: "Son of good family, it is like this: for example, a king has a strongman who has a vajra jewel on his forehead. When he competes in strength with another strongman, the other strongman touches his forehead, and the jewel sinks into the flesh, but he does not know where the jewel has gone. Because of the wound, he calls a doctor. The doctor is very skilled, but because the jewel has sunk into the flesh and caused the wound, he does not treat the wound. Instead, he says: 'Hey, strongman, where is the jewel on your forehead?' The strongman is alarmed and says to the doctor: 'My jewel on my forehead has not gone anywhere. If it is not there, is this not an illusion?' Thinking this, he is very sad. Then the doctor, in order to cheer him up, says: 'Do not be so sad. When you were competing in strength, the jewel sank into the flesh, and only an image appears on the outside. When you were competing in strength, anger arose, and because of the power of the jewel, you did not notice that it had sunk into the flesh.' Even though he said this, he did not believe it, and said: 'Doctor, you are lying. If it sank into the flesh, pus and blood are very dirty, so it should come out. If it fell into the water, you should be able to see it.' Then the doctor had him look in a mirror, and in the mirror the jewel appeared clearly. When the strongman saw that, he had a rare and wonderful thought. Son of good family, all sentient beings are the same. Because they have not relied on a virtuous friend, they cannot see the Buddha-nature even though it is there. They are obscured by desire, hatred, and delusion."
