I and others, seeing, are liberated. Possessing the characteristic of differentiation. The realm is empty of adventitious (defilements). Possessing the characteristic of non-differentiation. It is not empty of the unsurpassed Dharma. Thus it is said. In its commentary: What does this indicate? Because the Tathagatagarbha, which is completely pure by nature, has no cause for afflictions to be eliminated, since being free from adventitious stains is its nature. There is also nothing to be added to it by the cause of purification, since the Dharma of non-differentiation, the Dharma-nature of purity, is its nature. Therefore, the essence of the Tathagata is free from differentiation and non-differentiation. Consciousness is empty of all the husks of affliction, and the Buddha-Dharma, which is non-differentiated, inseparable, inconceivable, and more numerous than the sands of the Ganges, is not empty. Thus it is said. Among them, the self-empty (rangtong) asserts that phenomena, as they appear, are empty of their own essence from the very moment of appearance, and thus emptiness as negation is considered the ultimate truth. Although there is no difference in ultimate truth for the Prasangika Madhyamaka, who speak of the absence of inherent existence, they establish the tenet of Svatantrika, which asserts that conventional existence is like an illusion. Furthermore, by exclusively employing Prasangika arguments, they negate even the conventional existence that is acknowledged. These two traditions appear. For those Madhyamikas who establish other-empty (zhentong), all knowable things are considered to be of three natures. The difference lies in categorizing them into the two: the imputed and the perfectly established. Two different ways of identifying phenomena arise. In the treatises of Yogacara, the basis of emptiness, the dependent nature, is explained as the perfectly established, which is empty of the imputed, which is to be refuted. In the Uttaratantra and other texts, the Dharma-nature, the perfectly established, is said to be empty of the imputed, which is to be refuted. Therefore, the Dharma-nature of the perfectly established mind, the essence of this ultimate realm, has no defilements to be abandoned, nor new qualities to be established, because it is primordially pure by nature and its qualities are spontaneously accomplished. Since it transcends the acceptance and rejection of faults and virtues, the ultimate realm is empty of its own essence. The temporarily deluded appearances, the aspects of grasping and apprehended elaboration, are not established in reality.
