It is said, "He makes the objects to be tamed appear in an instant." It is said because of this. Moreover, the Buddha's field is the self-appearance of where one dwells, so it is impossible to seek another pure field with conceptual mind beyond abandoning the impure field. As it is said in the Extensive Sutra: "If there is no self-awareness of true knowledge, then the Sugata's field is also seen as a place of evil destinies. If one realizes the meaning of the supreme vehicle's equality, then the place of evil destinies is also Akanishta and Tushita." Also, in the Ornamentation of the Tree Sutra, it says: "Even on the tip of a single hair, there are countless fields that cannot be conceived. Various shapes are also different, but they are not mixed together." Also, in the Avatamsaka Sutra, it says: "On one atom are Buddhas as numerous as atoms." Thus, in reality, just as space pervades everywhere, the body and activity of the Buddha pervade. And this field of Shakyamuni is not established as self-characterized. For example, in the Sutra Famous as Stainless, the venerable Shariputra said: "I see this great earth as uneven, with cliffs and full of thorns." The Brahma with a topknot, who came from the field of the Buddha Free from Sorrow, said: "I see this field of the Bhagavan Shakyamuni as completely pure, like the abode of the gods of Paranirmita-vasavartin." Then, the Bhagavan showed the nature of this Buddha field to the mandala of the retinue, and everyone saw it as completely pure like the eastern Buddha field adorned with jewels. At that time, the Bhagavan said: "My Buddha field is always like this, but you have not seen it." It is like that. Second, the nature of the place is indicated from "the basis, the immeasurable wheel of wisdom is clear" to "on the stainless lotus jewel seat." Its meaning is that the symbol of the inseparability of the sphere and wisdom, self-appears as the shape and color of the palace. As it is said in the Core Text: "The nature of the place is suchness, the essence is Akanishta, the palace." Thus, from the state of suchness, the qualities naturally appear. That is,

Now, the characteristics of the element of earth are to be distinguished. In the Lesser Commentary, it says: "The base of the mandala, the material, the size, the shape, the protuberances, the apex, the ornaments, the door frames, the horse path, the characteristics, and the form of the seat," these are the eleven meanings. First, the general lower base of the mandala is indicated by "the base, the wheel of immeasurable wisdom is clear." Its meaning is: the general lower base is a symbol representing the five wisdoms, and it has the form of a wheel with immeasurable expanse. As it is said in the Great Play Tantra: "On the ground of the great wheel, the four-sided house is extremely magnificent." The inner lower base is indicated by "spags pa." The inner lower base of the mandala, from the doors and courtyards to the center, is successively spags pa with vajra pillars intersecting each other, because it is said to be a sign of ascending from the lower vehicle to this. Second, the material is indicated by "the mandala blazing with wisdom jewels." As a sign of fulfilling the hopes of those to be tamed, the material is wisdom made of jewels, which itself appears as shape and color. Third, the size is indicated by "the size is not limited in ten directions." Because it pervades all directions, it pervades the boundless realm of phenomena and appears spontaneously. Fourth, the shape is indicated by "it becomes square in order to increase immeasurable qualities." The meaning is that it is square, because the qualities of the Tathagata pervade, are equal, and increase here. As it is said in the Extensive Commentary: "It becomes square for equality and pervasiveness, and for increase." Fifth, the protuberances are indicated by "adorned with the protuberances of excellent wisdom jewels." The meaning is: the shape protruding from the four sides, like the protruding part of a castle, and the color is adorned with jewel protuberances of four colors, symbolizing that each wisdom has four excellent wisdoms. Sixth, the meaning of the apex is indicated by "the apex is the circle of all the Buddhas of the ten directions and four times, without exception, not separate, but the wisdom of one essence pervading everywhere" and "immeasurable." The meaning is: immeasurable, and the shape is the form of a round vase.
