Sapa said: Alas! Alas! With the two verses "ten directions, four times," etc., all the meanings of the beginning and end of the tantra are summarized into four appearances. The illusory appearance is to be purified, and the other three are to be known, traversed, and attained. It is taught not to deviate from the self-existent tantra. As for entrusting, the main text says, "To the collector, the woman, and the yogi with eyes, etc." Therefore, it is entrusted to the collector of the place, the future person with Dharma eyes, the mother, and the dakinis. Second, the classification of words is as follows: In the later tantra, it says, "That which explains the object to be expressed is called the expresser." Therefore, that which explains the object to be expressed is the expresser, the tantra of sound, or the tantra of letters, which is known as such. It also has the nature of three assemblies: the name is that which is designated and expressed as being the same as the sound for any dharma; the collection of many names is the assembly of names. That name itself, without being generally included, is distinguished by its individual distinctions, thus showing the difference between that dharma and its meaning, which is the word; and that which clarifies those names and words is called the letter. Thus, letters assemble to form names, names assemble to form words, and these assemble to form verses, prose, and chapters, etc., in a continuous sequence up to the formation of volumes, thus forming the textual collection of letters, or the expressive sound tantra that can represent the meaning of the object to be expressed. Because it is said, "Letters rely on the collection of names designated by sound, thus perfectly expressing words." Upon examination, from the emanation of the wisdom of the teacher, the meaning of the tantra naturally appears in the minds of the actual retinue, or in the minds of future disciples, the three assemblies of names, words, and letters, which appear as the totality of sound, are the tantra texts, that is, the tantra that appears as sound; and in accordance with this, due to the desire to express sound, in conjunction with place and action, etc., that which is spoken in the mouth is the tantra known as sound; and that which is expressed as the basis, the image of letters written externally on the volumes, is the tantra text that has become a symbol. From the point of view of the expresser, that is all. Why is it called the sound tantra? Because of the meaning of what is to be expressed...

Because that appears as the expression of speech, and is known as speech by its meaning, it is called speech, or because the collection of texts such as verses continues uninterruptedly, or because the five, namely the basis, cause, condition, and result, are related in the manner of cause, condition, and result, it is called a tantra. Alternatively, because the object of expression obtains the name of tantra, therefore the expression itself is also called tantra. The divisions are: the root tantra and the explanatory tantra, or the root tantra itself is also divided into twenty-two chapters of collections of words and abides. Among these, the first chapter, the upper part of the third chapter, and the fifteenth chapter, etc., explain the cause and basis, the second chapter explains the arising of conditions, the lower part of the third chapter up to the twenty-first chapter explain the result of completely knowing the meaning of the tantra, and the necessary connections of the tantra that pervade these, and the last chapter explains the instructions and entrustments, etc. Regarding the meaning of the tantra that should be completely known, the ten topics of the tantra and the peaceful and wrathful general and specific dharmas, etc., which chapter explains which way, etc., if you want to explain in detail, it is sufficient to explain in detail. Third, for those of lower faculties, it is explained elaborately in terms of each word and each phrase. There is the indication of the name of the tantra, and the reality of the meaning of the tantra that corresponds to that name. First, the indication of the name is: In Tibetan, (Tibetan), Secret Essence, Thatness Determined (literal Chinese meaning). There are three points to this: the necessity of what is said at the beginning, the explanation of the meaning of the name, and the refutation of disputes. First is: Just as one understands the object of a vase from the name vase, the superior faculties understand the meaning of the tantra based on the name, the intermediate faculties only understand the category of meaning, and even the lower faculties, like the label on a medicine container, find it easy to search for scriptures, there is such a necessity. Second, in the Vimala Small Commentary, it says: Self-nature is called secret, greatness is the meaning of essence, thatness is the nature, determination briefly indicates the meaning of determination. Therefore, the four names indicate the self-nature, greatness, nature, and meaning of determination of the tantra. Among these, the meaning of secret is: the reality of suchness, from the beginning, is naturally pure, therefore abiding in the equality of samsara and nirvana, is the inconceivable secret of the mind of all victors, that itself is profound and difficult to fathom, because it is extremely difficult to understand, therefore it is secret.
