Praise! Like this, the qualities arising from a virtuous spiritual friend are immeasurable. Because the opportunity for compassion is vast, it is like the sky. Because the collection of dharanis and samadhis is numerous, it is like the stars. Because compassion is immeasurable, it is like a great snow mountain sea. Because compassion is boundless, it is like a river. Because it is not moved by distraction, it is like a snow mountain. Because it is not moved by suchness, it is like Mount Meru. Although abiding in samsara, it is not stained by faults, like a great lotus. Loving-kindness is impartial without obscuration, like parents. Because qualities are immeasurable, it is like a source of jewels. Liberating all beings who wander in samsara, it is like a Tathagata. Thus, the collection of qualities is immeasurable and boundless. As it is said in the Noble Tree Sutra: 'Because he shows all goodness, a virtuous spiritual friend is like a father. Because he averts all evil, a virtuous spiritual friend is like a mother. Because he dispels the darkness of ignorance, a virtuous spiritual friend is like a lamp. Because he draws one from the mud of afflictions, a virtuous spiritual friend is like a giant.' Therefore, one should seek a virtuous spiritual friend. And so on, it is widely taught. If someone says: It is not appropriate to offer praise to the root guru at the beginning, because the main cause and condition for the arising of the lineage is the teacher, the perfectly complete Buddha, the sixth Vajradhara, Samantabhadra himself. Because he is the refuge of all beings and the supreme protector. Therefore, it is reasonable to offer praise to that object alone at the beginning. If you say this, there is no fault in this. Because praising the root guru is equivalent to praising all the lineage gurus, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. Why? Because in the reliable teachings of the Sugatas, it is said: 'Due to the difference in the intelligence of individuals, the supreme guru can be regarded as the fourth Jewel, or revered like all the Buddhas.' Moreover, for those with extremely great intelligence, it is even said that the guru is regarded as superior to all the Buddhas. This is also in the first sense. In the Buddha Equal Union Sutra, it says: 'The Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and the Guru, are also the fourth Jewel.'

Secondly, regarding the importance (of the Guru), the Vajra Mirror Tantra says: "Vajrasattva is the main deity of the mandala, the Guru is equal to all Buddhas." Also, the Guru Fifty Stanzas says: "The Guru and the Vajradhara, should not be regarded as different." Thirdly, regarding the importance (of the Guru), the Gongdu says: "Better than the Buddhas of a thousand kalpas, know the Guru to be especially important. Why is that? Because in a thousand kalpas, all the Buddhas without exception, arise in dependence on the Guru. Before there was a Guru, there was not even the name of Buddha." Also, the Sutra of Immaculate Space says: "Ananda, the Tathagatas do not appear to all sentient beings, but the spiritual friend appears universally, therefore he teaches the Dharma and sows the seeds of liberation, therefore more than the Tathagatas, you should cherish the spiritual friend." Moreover, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of the root Guru also abide in the nature of the limitless mandala of deities complete with the three places, as the Collected Tantra says: "In this body of the Vajra Acharya, the bodies of the Buddhas reside in sequence." Also, without relying on the Guru, the activity of the Buddha cannot enter the continuum of those to be tamed, therefore the Guru is definitely a special object, as it is said: "Although the sun's rays are very hot, without a burning glass, fire does not arise. Likewise, the blessings of the Buddha, without the Guru, cannot arise." It is also said: "Why is it said that the Vajradhara, follows the teacher of accomplishment?" Also, the noble protector Nagarjuna said: "If something falls from the peak of the mountain king, even if you think it will not fall, it will eventually fall. If you receive the benefit of the Guru's kindness, even if you think you will not be liberated, you will eventually be liberated." Therefore, the benefits of pleasing the root Guru are also inconceivable, as the Tantra of Supreme Wisdom says: "Better than offering to the Buddhas of a kalpa, if you smear a single sesame oil drop on a single hair of the Guru, the accumulation of merit is especially superior." Also, the Sutra of Manjushri Wisdom Ornament says: "A son or daughter of good family who possesses supreme faith, if...

If one serves a spiritual friend, the accumulation of merit is immeasurable, beyond measure, surpassing the offering to all the Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. Therefore, if it is necessary to praise the root guru first, then in what way should one praise him? It is like this: "From the churning of the ocean of the two accumulations, excellently born, the great wisdom, like the sun's rays, causing the lotus of benefit and happiness for beings to bloom, the great treasure, Dharma King Terdak Lingpa." As it is said. In the past, countless eons ago, with unwavering courage, having reached the other shore, the profound ocean of merit and wisdom was manifestly churned, resulting in an extraordinary deed. Through joy, steadfastness, and great diligence, in general, in the sky of the completely pure realm of Dharma, the mandala of great wisdom, like the sun, fully expanded, and the rays of altruistic activity shone in all directions, causing the lotus garden of benefit and happiness for all beings to bloom. In particular, the great teacher Padmasambhava, the profound treasure, the secret seal, not becoming the realm of the inferior, the great power of the sacred Dharma, manifestly wielding the royal power of activity, therefore he is the Dharma King. The entire world, including the gods, pays homage to the lotus of his feet, he is the guru of the three realms, the Buddha of the three times, the guide of the three existences, the protector and supreme ornament of all gods and humans. Inseparable from the great Vajradhara, the venerable and supreme Terdak Lingpa Jigdral Phok Tamchey Ley Nampar Gyalwai Dey (འཇིགས་བྲལ་ཕྱོགས་ཐམས་ཅད་ལས་རྣམ་པར་རྒྱལ་བའི་སྡེ), whose white banner of fame is fully hoisted at the peak of existence. I, a fool, with body, speech, and mind, with great reverence, bow to the garland of his immaculate lotus feet. Please, with great compassion, hold me, and grant me the eloquence of wisdom and courage to expound the excellent teachings. Thus, praising one's own root guru and praying for the desired meaning.
