Ah! Some die for pearls, wool, bones, blood, flesh, and skin. Others are forced to be beaten and used with feet, hands, iron, and iron hooks. Regarding lifespan, among animals, the longest-lived can live for a kalpa. It is said that the long-lived can live for a kalpa, while the short-lived are uncertain. Thus, contemplate the suffering of the lower realms: now, to put a finger in the fire and stay for a day, or to stay naked in a cold snowdrift in winter, or to have no food or drink day and night, or to be bitten by mosquitoes and lice on the body, even these are difficult to endure. Then, how can the suffering of hells, hungry ghosts, and animals be endured? By comparing with one's own experience now, generate fear and strong renunciation, thereby making this precious human body meaningful. Second, contemplate the faults of the higher realms: by accumulating corresponding virtuous deeds, that is, small, medium, and large virtuous deeds, one is born successively as a human, a desire realm god, and a higher realm god, and enjoys the happiness of each state. Therefore, thinking that there is no happiness in the lower realms, one should strive to attain a good rebirth. However, all of samsara is of the nature of suffering and is meaningless. Not only are the lower realms so painful, but one must also contemplate that the higher realms also have the nature of suffering. Among these, there are three: contemplating the suffering of humans, contemplating the suffering of Asuras, and contemplating the suffering of gods. First, contemplating the suffering of humans: generally, at the time of birth, one must stay for months in the narrow, dark, foul-smelling womb, where the changes of hot and cold are difficult to endure. Then, being pulled out headfirst like being pulled from the eye of a needle, or like being whipped with thorns, or like a bird being snatched by an eagle when picked up, there is such suffering. Then, at the time of aging, because the color fades, the luster of the body becomes unsightly, appearing bluish-black and ashen-white, and the hair turns white. Because the radiance and shape of the senses fade, the teeth fall out. The body becomes hunched over, and the limbs become crooked. The flesh dries up, and the skin loosens. The face is covered with wrinkles. Because strength diminishes, it is difficult to stand. Walking is shaky, and sitting is wobbly. Speaking becomes mumbled. Because the senses decline, the eyes cannot see clearly, and the ears cannot hear. Because enjoyment declines, one is hungry if there is too little food, and cannot digest if there is too much.

cannot be used for desires, etc., and are displeasing to all. Moreover, due to past karma and incidental factors, diseases caused by the imbalance of the four elements inflict suffering, causing intense pain and physical decline. There is no freedom to enjoy desired food, drink, and sleep, and one must resort to unwanted medicines and treatments, enduring endless suffering due to the fear of death. At the time of death, no matter what treatments or rituals are performed, they are of no avail. All the wealth, power, and retinue that were painstakingly acquired are regretted, and even the cherished body must be abandoned, dying with intense agony. These four sufferings are common to all. Moreover, there are individual sufferings as well. Even in the intervals when the four sufferings are less intense, one endures the suffering of not achieving one's desires, despite risking life and limb and enduring countless hardships to obtain meager worldly happiness and wealth. There is the suffering of encountering unpleasant conditions such as heat, cold, hunger, thirst, disease, evil spirits, enemies, and thieves. There is the suffering of being separated from loved ones, friends, retinue, wealth, and other joys and happiness. In short, the more retinue and wealth the rich possess, the greater the suffering of protecting them. The poor, even when striving to find food, clothing, and other necessities, cannot obtain them, and are therefore filled with the suffering of poverty. As the Jataka says: "One is tormented by guarding, two are exhausted by seeking; whether rich or poor, there is no joy anywhere." The Four Hundred Verses also say: "The superior suffer mental anguish, the ordinary suffer bodily pain; these two sufferings constantly afflict and destroy the world day by day." As these words indicate, what we have directly experienced is sufficient to illustrate this. Second, contemplating the suffering of the Asuras. First, upon seeing the perfect splendor of the gods, they are constantly filled with unbearable anguish due to jealousy. From time to time, they fight with the gods, and because the Asuras have less merit and power, they suffer intense pain from being killed, beaten, dismembered, and so on. At this time, even if the gods are struck in the head or below the waist, they can revive, but the Asuras cannot.
