After eating, even if one escapes, they are still chased by many ferocious beasts. Seeing the garden of iron thorn trees, they flee there and climb up and down. Because the sharp thorns are sixteen fingers long up and down, the body is pierced like a sieve, and crows and other iron-beaked birds peck at the eyes and tear at the flesh, causing terror. Even if one escapes from there, they are tormented by the heat and see a flowing river, so they run. They fall into the extremely hot river that causes things to change. When they sink to the bottom, the flesh and bones separate, leaving only white bones. When they rise to the surface, flesh grows back and they sink again. Although they want to escape, the hell guardians holding weapons on both sides do not allow them to escape. Sometimes they are pulled out with iron hooks, laid on their backs, and asked what they want. We know nothing, see nothing, but are hungry and thirsty. When they say this, they suffer the pain of having burning embers and molten copper poured into their mouths, etc. Among these, the razor mountain, the forest, and the iron thorn tree are grouped together as four surrounding hells. In these hells, although the lifespan is not specified, they must each stay for hundreds of thousands of years, so the intensity of the suffering is severe and the duration is long. Fourth, contemplating the suffering of the ephemeral hells: The places are uncertain, such as near the main hells, by the sea, underground, and on the surface of mountains, rivers, and plains. The suffering is being burned by fire, frozen and cracked, killed and eaten by executioners, etc., as well as being comfortable during the day and suffering at night, or vice versa, etc., and the lifespan is also uncertain, as described in the Jataka tales of 'Rice Sprout' and 'Guarding the Sangha'. Therefore, the cause of being born in these places is, as will be explained, that much has been accumulated in the past, and is still being accumulated now. If there is only this breath between this life and hell, one should not remain in comfort. As Shantideva said: Having done the deeds of hell, why dwell here in comfort? And as it says in the 'Letter to a Friend': The moment a sinful person's breath is about to cease, To hear of the immeasurable suffering of hell, If you are not afraid, your mind is diamond. Seeing, hearing, and remembering pictures of hell,

Even those who have been reduced to ashes and forms will experience fear, let alone those who are experiencing unbearable retributive results. It is said. Furthermore, it is said that the suffering one experiences from being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in a single day cannot even compare to the smallest suffering in hell; it is not even a shadow, let alone bearable. It is said. The cause of such suffering is entirely one's own misdeeds, so one must strive to abandon them. Second, contemplate the suffering of the pretas: They mostly reside five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa, scattered everywhere, pervading all places such as land, mountains, and rivers. Regarding pretas, the Sutra on Mindfulness mentions thirty-six types, but broadly speaking, there are three types: those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with obscurations regarding food and drink. The pretas with external obscurations are those whose mouths and bodies are all dry and emaciated due to hunger and thirst, with thin throats and limbs, matted hair, and who run around everywhere in search of food but cannot find it. Even if they see piles of food, rivers, and fruit-bearing trees from afar, when they arrive there, the food vanishes without a trace, the rivers dry up or turn into pus and blood, and the fruit trees turn into dry stumps without fruit. Even if this does not happen, there is suffering from many people holding weapons who block and guard them, and so on. The pretas with internal obscurations are those who have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but stomachs as large as mountains, and are afflicted by hunger, without the ability to even seek out a small amount of unclean discarded matter. It is said that even if they find food and drink, they cannot get it into their mouths, and even if they do, the food is lost in their cheek pouches, the water is dried up by the poison in their mouths, and even if they swallow a little, it cannot pass through their throats, and even if it does, their stomachs cannot be filled, and so on, suffering from being unable to eat or drink. The pretas with obscurations regarding food and drink are those whose food and drink, once inside their stomachs, turns into burning flames, burning their internal organs, and who eat filth, that is, unclean and foul-smelling things such as excrement, urine, pus, blood, mucus, and phlegm, as well as harmful things that only cause suffering, such as poison and embers. All of these, in general, constantly endure the suffering of hunger and thirst.
