Common Preliminary Teachings: The Jewel Staircase Herein dwells the text entitled "Common Preliminary Teachings: The Jewel Staircase." Written by Rigdzin Gyurme Dorje. Oṃ Svasti. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Though unmoving from the expanse of great bliss and peace, with endless displays of various magical dances, bestowing all things of benefit and happiness, I prostrate to the Lama, the essence of the Supreme Three Jewels! From the perilous precipice of the city of existence, to the supreme city of liberation and freedom, this precious staircase swiftly and blissfully leads the fortunate. Herein, I shall elucidate the stages of the path. Generally, the very nature of mind of all sentient beings is primordially enlightened. To realize this, there are two approaches: relying on the path of gradual entry through study and contemplation for those of lesser intellect, and the path of direct transcendence through faith and devotion for those of superior intellect. Both approaches are found in the teachings of both Sutra and Tantra. Considering the first approach, one must train in generating the mind of three pursuits based on the three non-attachments. First, by contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments and the impermanence of life, one becomes free from attachment to this life and genuinely generates the mind of pursuing the happiness of higher realms in the future. Second, by contemplating the sufferings of samsara and the law of karma, one becomes free from attachment to samsara and genuinely generates the mind of pursuing definitive liberation for oneself. Third, by cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, one becomes free from attachment to self-interest and genuinely generates the mind of desiring to attain enlightenment for the sake of others. Thus, Until one can truly understand and generate the mind of these three types of individuals, continuous practice is the root of all Dharma. If these three minds have not arisen in one's being, no matter how one practices deity yoga, recites mantras, etc., there is no certainty of where one will go. Therefore, one should understand how to practice in the following sequence: contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, contemplate death and impermanence, contemplate the faults of samsara, and contemplate the law of karma. First, the contemplation of leisure and endowments includes: identifying leisure and endowments, the difficulty of obtaining them, and contemplating their great significance. The first point is:

Therefore, one must strive for a way not to be born in this unbearable suffering-filled samsara. And the basis for accomplishing this is this very leisure and fortune body. Because, other than this time, it is extremely difficult to obtain. So, one must single-mindedly think that one must definitely attain the essence in this lifetime. Moreover, in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses, it says: Hell beings, pretas, and animals, barbarians, long-lived gods, wrong views, and those devoid of Buddhas, the mute—these are the eight unfree states. Thus, if born in the three lower realms, suffering is extremely intense, and the physical basis is extremely bad, so there is no leisure for Dharma. The gods of the desire realm are distracted by attachment to sensual pleasures and have little renunciation. Most of the gods of the form and formless realms are constantly intoxicated by samadhi, so there is no leisure for Dharma. Being born in a world system where no Buddha has appeared, in a place devoid of Buddhas, or even if a Buddha has appeared, being born in a remote, barbaric land where the Dharma has not spread, or, even if born in a place where the Dharma has spread, holding wrong views that do not acknowledge past and future lives, karma and its results, and the Three Jewels, and becoming foolish and mute, not understanding anything about what should be taken and abandoned, and being born without any thought of acceptance or rejection—these are the eight unfree states. Among these, the three lower realms and long-lived gods are non-human unfree states, and the other four are human unfree states. It is also said that the unfree gods refer to the gods of the realm of non-discrimination. Thus, being free from the eight unfree states is leisure. As it says in the Jewel Sky Sutra: Bodhisattva Akashagarbha asked: Blessed One, how should one view leisure and fortune? The Buddha replied: The mind being disturbed and scattered by conceptual thoughts is called busyness. The mind being pacified from conceptual thoughts and abiding in its own nature is called leisure. And as it says in the Compendium: By abandoning the eight unfree states, one always obtains leisure. Thus it is taught. Among the ten fortunate qualities, the five personal fortunes are: being human, born in the central land, having complete faculties, not engaging in perverse actions, and having faith in the proper objects. Thus, in general, I have obtained a human body, and in particular, I was born in the central land where the Dharma flourishes, and I have complete faculties such as the five senses, so I can understand what to accept and reject, and I have not committed or am committing
