Obscured by illness, indulging in the distractions of this life. Postponing the accomplishment of future goals, being dominated by laziness, therefore, one must contemplate impermanence. Among these, it is necessary to think about death, that there is no certainty when one will die, and that no one can escape death. First, thinking about the certainty of death: if one has obtained the leisure and endowment and does not die, that would be good. But there is not the slightest certainty of permanence; no matter what kind of body one takes, no matter what kind of companion one relies on, one cannot escape death. The beings on earth,

Furthermore, due to being influenced by distractions, wandering, and various meaningless activities, the opportunity to practice Dharma is very brief now. Therefore, recognizing that the perfections and deceptions of this life are like the happiness of a single dream, one should diligently practice the sacred Dharma. Second, contemplate the uncertainty of when death will occur. If one thinks, "Although I will eventually die, I won't die for a while, so why rush?" In general, except for unpleasant sounds, the lifespan of other beings is uncertain, and especially the lifespan of those in Jambudvipa is extremely uncertain. Initially, there were instances of living for immeasurable years, but eventually, ten years had to be the limit, and even now, no one, whether old, young, or in between, can be certain of when they will die. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Here, lifespan is uncertain, the longest is ten years, initially immeasurable years." If, due to past good deeds, one might extend one's lifespan to sixty or seventy years, that is not to be counted from today. So much has already passed. It is impossible to predict how much longer one can last. Perhaps one will only extend it by thirty or forty years. In any case, considering the beings we have seen and heard who have suddenly died, we too are no different from them. The Omniscient Dharma Lord said: "This life is impermanent like a clay pot. Between tomorrow and the next life, it is uncertain which will come first, therefore, one should practice the sacred Dharma immediately." As he said, since we cannot know which will come first, tomorrow or our next life, we must completely sever all attachments to the activities of this life. As Nagarjuna said: "The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, and the seven suns, burned by fire, will turn even these beings to ashes. What need is there to mention the extremely fragile?" As it says, the body is as fragile as a water bubble, the breath is like autumn mist, ready to vanish at any moment, and the mind, without autonomy, is like a lost wanderer with nowhere to go. As it says: "It is not reasonable to think, 'I will not die today,' and live in comfort." Nagarjuna also said: "The causes of death are many, the causes of life are few. Even those are causes of death, therefore, always practice the Dharma." As it says, external causes, such as harm from humans, animals, demons, and obstacles, as well as fire, water, cliffs, and so on.

The harm of arising. In the inner body, there are four hundred and four types of diseases, etc. In short, there is nothing that does not lead to death. Even relying on food, clothing, medicine, etc., for survival does not guarantee that they will not become causes of death. Therefore, if I am in the midst of a storm of evil circumstances leading to death, I should contemplate: When will I die? As the holy ones have said: In the interval of carelessness, the Lord of Death, the demon, will seize you. Practice now, Dingriwa! As it is said. Third, thinking that nothing but the Dharma can help with death. When the moment of death manifests, even if you have accumulated a lot of wealth, you have no power to take it with you; even the flesh and bones born with you must be left behind. Even if you are surrounded by beloved relatives, friends, and servants, you have no power to take them with you. Even if you have built a strong house, you have no right to stay there, and you must part with all the perfections of this life and go involuntarily to an unfamiliar place. Food, wealth, knowledge, power, intelligence, mantras, dependent arising, none of these can prevent it. As the sutra says: Great King! Sickness destroys health, old age destroys youth, decline destroys perfection, and death destroys life. It is not easy to quickly escape from these, or to ward them off with wealth, or to pacify them with objects, mantras, and medicines. Shantideva also said: When one is seized by the messengers of Yama, what good are relatives? What good are friends? So, if these cannot follow, what will follow? Only the good and bad deeds that one has accumulated will follow. As it is said in the Sutra of Advice to the King: When the king is forced by circumstances to depart, enjoyment, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever beings go, karma will follow like a shadow. Therefore, be certain that all the changes of the outer and inner world are showing you impermanence. All the activities of this life are endless and of little significance. Only the Dharma can continuously bring benefit at the time of death and thereafter, so it is very important to think that one should strive to practice the Dharma now. Like this
