is worthy of it. The way of its transformation is: the former transforms into the latter. How is it? Afflictions, in a self-indulgent way, bind to samsara through the karma of the three doors (body, speech, and mind). If one grasps it with wisdom and compassion, and enters the vows of abandoning misdeeds, one can be liberated from the lower realms and become the cause for higher realms and liberation, this is the Pratimoksha of the Hearers. If one grasps it with the intention of skillful means and great wisdom, and engages in the activities of benefiting others, it can become the cause for liberation into great Bodhi, this is the Bodhisattva Vow. If one also completely grasps and utilizes it with the great greatness of skillful means and wisdom, it can become the cause for effortlessly and spontaneously accomplishing the unsurpassed great Bodhi, this is the Mantra Vow. Therefore, it is said in the Tantra: "A type of stone, when melted, produces iron, copper, and silver." etc., as quoted before, is the way the vows of the three lineages transform into the Mantra Vow, is it said like that? Or, in the Secret Conduct Tantra, it says: "For example, stone transforms into copper, copper manifests as gold, in the time of copper there is no stone, when it becomes gold, copper does not appear. For the Bhikshu within the Vidyadhara, the Pratimoksha and Bodhicitta, the Buddha did not say that these two exist." As explained in Lo chen Rinchen Zangpo's "General Characteristics" and as quoted by Kunkhyen Chenpo in "Righteous Chariot", for example, copper ore melts into copper, and then it is treated with alchemy to become gold. Similarly, the Pratimoksha vow taken with an inferior mind like a Hearer, when it is grasped by the Bodhisattva Vow, even if the inferior mind is abandoned, its own nature of abandoning the basis of harming others, transforms into the moral discipline of the Bodhisattva's transgressions. When both of them receive empowerment, abandoning the antidote of ordinary appearance clinging that is not grasped by the means of great equality, the abandonment of the basis of harming others in the Pratimoksha and the antidote of benefiting others in the Bodhisattva Vow, in the manner of material increase, are grasped by the special means of great equality, transforming into the Mantra's transgressions vow and the Samaya of the Five Families in general or Vairochana. Therefore, the actions of the three doors (body, speech, and mind)

Even on a single basis, transformations occur from smaller to larger methods. In the era of vidyādhara mantras, there are no distinct substances called "So-yang" (སོ་བྱང་), because they have been transformed into the substance of mantra vows. For example, on a single basis, the three minds of abandoning the taking of life, obtained during the time of So-yang mantras, are like the former transforming into the latter, being of the same essence. The mind that desires to attain complete enlightenment over countless eons for the sake of others, and the mind that desires to attain complete enlightenment in one lifetime through mantra, these two minds are like the former transforming into the latter, being of the same essence. However, the three different aspects of the minds of the three vows, their arising, abiding, and ceasing do not occur simultaneously. Because they abide and cease according to how they were initially taken, their respective aspects are not mixed. The earlier vows of a tantra with three vows are of the same essence as the later ones, but the later ones are not of the same essence as the earlier ones after transformation. Because the later ones are more extensive than the earlier ones. And, when taking the later vows, many new vow substances must arise, not being a continuation of the previous vow substances. To this, some say: The monastic vow of a vajra-holder lineage with three (prātimokṣa, bodhisattva, and mantra) vows is the bodhisattva vow and mantra vow of that lineage, because it has transformed into those vows. The answer to this is that this assertion is both uncertain and contradictory. First, your assertion is uncertain, because even if the former transforms into the latter, it is not necessarily that. Just as the ālaya-vijñāna and afflicted mind transform into the wisdom of a Buddha, but they are not that. Second, based on the entity, your assertion is contradictory, just as a youth transforming into an old person, but the two are contradictory. Furthermore, if it is shown to be that at the time of transformation, then when the vows of the three lineages transform into the mantra vow, the vows of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are the vows of the Mahāyāna, because they are the vows of vidyādharas. There is no answer to this. The example also shows that it is impossible for these three to exist on the same basis, just as when iron, copper, and silver are transformed into gold in alchemy, although these three metals transform into gold, these three metals cannot be that gold.
