Chapter Five: Summarizing the Meaning of the Inseparability of the Three Vows ༈ Homage to the Three Jewels! The perfectly enlightened Buddha, who shows the pure and excellent path; The community of spiritual friends who uphold that teaching through explanation and practice; Especially to the root guru who ripens my mind-stream through the kindness of the three vows, I prostrate! If one knows the nature of the sugata-garbha, the basis for purification; If one desires the result of purification, the state of perfect Buddhahood; If there is nothing other than abandoning the stains to be purified; Then why not enter this path of purification, the path of the three vows? Third, analyzing how to practice the three vows without contradiction in the mind-stream of a single individual, thereby summarizing the meaning, has three aspects: briefly introducing from the perspective of grasping the body of the subject matter; analyzing in detail from the perspective of elaborating on the limbs; and concluding from the perspective of summarizing and presenting how to practice the three vows. The first is: Such three vows in the mind-stream of one individual, Self-nature unmixed, negation necessary, completely perfect. Essence transforms, qualities increase, Key points not contradictory, which to primarily apply in which situation. This means, how are these three vows of individual liberation, bodhisattva, and mantra, successively received, present in the mind-stream of a practitioner? To establish this, here it is explained by summarizing into six points, which aligns with the view of the omniscient Dharma King, Drimé Özer (Vimalamitra). In Samten Ngalso (Resting the Mind in Meditation), it says: Śrāvakas, Bodhicitta, and Vidyādharas, Without contradicting these three vows, Taming one's own mind-stream, whatever benefit for others is accomplished, And transforming whatever appears into the path of purity. Explaining the meaning of this in the commentary Shingta Namdak (The Pure Chariot), it says: "So, what is it?" For maintaining the three vows completely in the mind-stream of one individual, there are six points: self-nature unmixed, negation necessary, completely perfect, essence transforms, qualities increase, the key points of the three vows are not contradictory, and which to primarily apply in which situation. Second, among the six points, the first, self-nature unmixed, is: Their objects of taking, intention, rituals, etc., Each determined separately, therefore self-nature is unmixed. This means that these three vows, the object from which one takes them, the intention with which one takes them, and the rituals by which one takes them are all different. Even the time for which one takes them is determined separately. Therefore, the essence transforms.

Moreover, since contradictory entities cannot have a common basis, their respective contradictory aspects do not mix, because they remain separate without being lost after being obtained. This is also because the Pratimoksha vows are taken until the end of life, and the Bodhisattva vows are taken until the essence of enlightenment. However, when the mantra vows are obtained, there is no mention of conditions for their deterioration or abandonment. For example, the Mahayana Pratimoksha vows taken with the intention of generating Bodhicitta according to the Shravaka tradition, or the Shravaka Bhikshu vows themselves, which are transformed into the Pratimoksha vows in the continuum that abides therein after generating Bodhicitta again, whichever it may be, it has two contradictory aspects: the intention of Bodhicitta and the vows. The former is not abandoned at the time of death, because it is not a cause for abandoning the Bodhisattva vows. The latter, the contradictory aspect at the time of taking the vows, is abandoned due to death, because the Bhikshu vows are vows with a lifetime limit. As it is said in the Differentiation Treatise: "Although the Mahayana Pratimoksha is until the end, the vows of Bhikshus, etc., are abandoned at the time of death. The contradictory aspect of Bodhicitta, and its result, arise even after death." Second, the entirety of what needs to be abandoned and what is needed: What needs to be abandoned, the afflictions, what is needed does not bind, completely possessing the face of each path. Transforming abandonment into the path, each is different, but the wise agree on abandoning the self-nature of afflictions. This means that all three vows are the same in abandoning non-virtue in one's own continuum. In the Vinaya Sutra, it is said: "Any Dharma that directly or indirectly becomes the cause of attachment, and does not become free from attachment, this is not Dharma, not Vinaya, not the Teacher's teaching, it should be known. Any Dharma that directly or indirectly becomes the cause of being free from attachment, and does not become the cause of attachment, this is Dharma, Vinaya, the Teacher's teaching, it should be known." It is also extensively explained regarding hatred and so on. For example, with regard to impure conduct, the Shravakas do not engage in it even though they have the ability to do so, and engaging in it through the methods of the two higher vows, both of these are abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned, and what is needed.
