The key to not being bound by afflictions is that both are equally not tainted by the defilement of desire. Therefore, although their respective paths appear different, from the perspective of having the same key point, what needs to be abandoned is completely the same. For example, the Hearers consider both truths to be substantially existent, and thus abandon afflictions through individual liberation vows; Bodhisattvas consider conventional truth to be substantially existent, thereby transforming afflictions into dharmata; and Tantrikas view the nature of the five afflictions as the five wisdoms, and thus make them the path. Therefore, although the methods of these three antidotes appear different, in essence, they are all the same in abandoning afflictions that have self-nature. For example, detoxifying, using medicine to purify, and eating poison after consecrating it with mantras—all three achieve the purpose of not being harmed by poison. Third, the transformation of essence is: if individual liberation is seized by the aspiration of bodhicitta, it becomes the discipline called "vows to abandon misdeeds"; after obtaining empowerment, it transforms into the vows of Vajradhara. Therefore, it is said that this is the transformation of essence. The testimony of the five hundred thousand verses clearly establishes this. That is to say, in general, the great ones who came before and after have two views on the essence of the three vows: one view holds that the three vows have different essences, and the other holds that after transformation, they have the same essence. Among the views that hold that they have different essences, there are two types: one holds that the higher suppresses the lower, and the other holds that the lower becomes the basis of the higher, that is, it is considered that there is a relationship between the dependent and the depended upon. The first view holds that the higher suppresses the lower, and the lower exists in the form of latency in the alaya consciousness, but the lower does not manifest, which can be illustrated by the example of the three—stars, the moon, and the sun. This view is unreasonable. Because, in the continuum of someone who has bodhisattva vows, even if the bhikshu vows do not manifest, can they be considered a bhikshu simply because there is a latency of bhikshu vows in the alaya consciousness? If so, then all sentient beings have dharmas and are bhikshus, because there must be a habit of bhikshu in the alaya consciousness. Moreover, the person who has renounced the bhikshu vows should also have bhikshu vows in your continuum, because there is a habit of vows following in his mindstream. The metaphor is also inappropriate, because under the rays of the sun, the light of the moon and stars will be obscured, so there should be uncommon darkness. The three vows

Because if I do not relinquish it, there will be many non-common transgressions of the lower vows that are not prohibited by the higher vows. The second view is: When an emerald-like object is placed in a clear container filled with pure water, both the container and the water turn the color of the jewel, becoming a part of the jewel. Just as these three are different substances in a dependent relationship, they believe that when the higher vows are taken, the lower vows become a part, but are not different substances. This is also unreasonable, because just as the container is indispensable as a basis for both water and jewel, the Pratimoksha vows are definitely necessary as a basis for the two higher vows. If this is the case, then the two higher vows can only arise based on men and women of the three continents, which is too extreme. Moreover, when a Bhikshu Vajradhara, seeing that it will definitely change for the benefit of others, relinquishes the Bhikshu's precepts, the Bhikshu's vows in that continuum, because you relinquish them, it follows that you also relinquish the two higher vows. What is your basis for the arising and abiding of the two higher vows? Because relinquishing the basis leads to relinquishing the dependent, because without the container as the basis, the water and jewel that depend on it must also not exist. The common fault of both those who assert subjugation and dependence is: If the three vows are considered to be different entities in nature, then it would follow that in the retinue of one main mind, there would simultaneously be three mental factors of the same kind but different natures. Therefore, this is unreasonable. Therefore, the view of our own system in this text is: The three vows are transformed places, the same in essence but different in aspects. This system, as clearly shown in the Guhyagarbha Tantra and other texts of the Early Translation School, is held by translators Rongzom Chökyi Zangpo, most of the Zur tradition lamas, and Narton Sengé Ö, who is famous for explaining its commentaries, especially the omniscient great Trimé Özer, and our root guru Jé Tertön Chökyi Gyalpo, and other scholars and accomplished masters of the Early Translation School, as well as the translator Rinchen Zangpo of the New Translation School, the great Sakya Pandita, an embodiment of Manjushri, and his followers. The views of these incomparable scholars and accomplished masters of both the old and new schools are flawless, and therefore praised by the wise.
